I first attempted using ... a boot image which has a name that is apparently censored here. It would just get stuck on the grey screen when starting the install.

I then tried ModCD. This allowed the install to complete.

Trying to boot results in an error in the boot loader that it can't find legacy_kernel. (I think? Didn't write that one down)

I can then attempt to boot with mach_kernel, but it freezes part way through. It always stops at netkas presents fakesmc.

I've tried -x, -F, -x -F, each delivers similar results. (mach_kernel and -v on all of them)

Attached is a picture of the screen where it fails.

I only get to work on this a few hours a week, and it's my main computer the rest of the time, no 2nd box to simultaneously look stuff up.

There are a lot of other command options that I don't yet have time to fully investigate. Hopefully the information in this post might be enough to get help narrowing down what to try next.

Thanks!

It says there is a problem with the AppleRTC.kext. Try the following. Boot "mach_kernel -s" without the quotes. This will put you into a command line environment. When you see the prompt "root:", then:

Type: mount -uw /
Type: cd /System/Library/Extensions
Type: chown -R root:wheel AppleRTC.kext
Type: chmod -R 755 AppleRTC.kext

Then reboot "mach_kernel -v".

I'm having all sorts of issues now.

I started it back up and it wouldn't get to the point of the error about AppleRTC.kext.

I did try to start with -S, and it would not reach a command line.

I decided to reinstall it, and now the installer errors out after about 10 minutes, with different errors each time, followed by the dvd drive being hung with the disc still spinning at full speed (have to shut the computer off in order to get the disc out). Yeah, I've never heard of a dvd drive being hung like that. The installer was still responding and let me hit restart - but the drive wouldn't work until fully powering the system down.

It's ridiculously hot here, and my landlord won't fix the AC, so it's 95(34.4) degrees inside. I'm gonna wait until it's cooler to keep working on it, could be heat related. I think perhaps the DVD drive might be too hot or is just failing. The core of my system is very capable of smooth operation in 100+ degree weather.
