I don't want to format the entire disk, as i don't want to lose what's on my xp partition.

Tell the Virtual Machine to only use a single partiton instead of the whole drive :)

already done that, when i set it up i only let it use my new partition

Well, that is strange... :)

That has to be a bug in the VMWare program, as I remember setting up my Virtual Machine to only use one partition. I had no problems at all...

Try making a whole new Virtual Machine, and whilst setting it up, add the partition you want to use. See if that works...

yeah, i have.

*edit*

set up a new VM, and i'm still getting the same thing, it wants me to overwrite the xp partition :)

Hmmm, well, I'm sorry, but I can't help you then. I am completly baffled as to why it is doing that. All I can put it down to, is the only difference - you're using Vista, correct? Perhaps it's a bug in the software, I dunno. Sorry I can't help you any further.

No, i'm on XP on the laptop, which is where i'm installing it. the only thing i can think that i've done diferently to you is to use the iso of the dvd across the network, it's on a shared folder on the desktop, would this cause the problem? nothing else is different
