hampsatcmu
Hardware Asus P4P800-E mobo 4 GB, PC3200, 3-4-4-8 (single channel) Radeon X850 XTP graphics P4 3.04 GHz (not clear from my info if it's in the wiki components)* 2 Samsung 160 GB SATA-2 drives (on SATA-1, non-RAID ctrl) (ubuntu 6.06 "Daffy (Dapper) Duck") add'l intel Gb eth1 card (wiki says ASUS onboard doesn't work) * under Ubuntu, /proc/cpu shows that the processor is SSE2, but NOT SSE3. OSX ver. jas 10.4.6 bootable iso on DVD ============================ I partition the drive HFS+, 1 partition, named "OSX" (as opposed to the mac convention of "Macintosh HD", if that matters). I've "custom" installed and tried both SSE2 nand SSE3 (i.e., not both). I've also tried pulling out the SATA drives and building a single IDE disk. I've read many howto's on installing and checked the h/w wiki for compatibility... pretty much everything I can think of. Much like several other poor souls, I get a nice, clean install. but after post (and this is a bit different from the other, similar threads, but I'm not sure it matters) I get a blinking "_" in the top left corner of a black screen. It looks like the (NeXT look-alike) verbose boot is just about to start, but it doesn't. The BIOS is definitely detecting all the devices and I'm running the correct boot priorities. ANYONE WITH MY MOBO HAVE ANY GOOD IDEAS? hampsatcmu
This thread explains why I couldn't get a proper boot after installing. Many of the posts around the net don't address the issue of setting the HFS+ (or AF if you're using fdisk --- see fdisk partitioning: HFS+ == "AF") I was not setting the boot partion active. Ironically, I found the above thread while searching on my mobo "P4P800-E" OK, now I'm going to attempt a 10.4.6 -> 10.4.7 upgrade. FYI, it's supposed to be as simple as inserting the iso DVD and installing the 10.4.7 package. If I don't post again, it worked.
