Hello you wonderful people !

First of all, just wanted to thank you all for your unselfish help you are providing here in these forums ! There are some poeple that really appreciate everything you do. Thanks again !

Few days ago, I've got macosx10.4.4.install.dvd.jas DVD. Sorry, just to mention my configuration... I have 17.4" Gateway M675. Full specs can be found in here:

GATEWAY M675 SPECIFICATIONS

It is a Pentium 4 with Hyper-Threading Technology.

I just purchased another (new) HD and completely cloned my old system image to it, so in case I mess up something with my old HD so badly, I can always put this new one in. Anyway...

Right now I have my old HD inside partitioned to 2 partitions, C: and D:

Of course C: partition contains my OS which is Windows XP Pro SP2. Following all those advices all over the net, I resized my C: partition (shrinked it) so I've got around 10 Gb of unallocated space which of course I'll need to install OSX86, right ?

Then I rebooted my laptop, logged in to Windows again, and clicked on START menu/RUN. I typed DISKPART and command prompt opened up. In the window that just came up, I typed: SELECT DISK 0

Then I typed this: CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=10000 ID=AF

This is supposed to create partition in which I will have to install OS X on. Then I rebooted my computer, put an installation DVD, pressed some key for installation to start (as it says inside the Darwin boot sequence) and process starts:

The problem is always the same, and every single time I try to install this, I get this message:

dscf1183bf6.jpg

And this is the error log file:

dscf1184ym6.jpg

However, I am able to go to UTILITIES / DISK UTILITY...

And when I click on Mac OS X on the left side, press on VERIFY DISK, and this is the result:

dscf1193kg9.jpg

Everything seems ok to me, except I still can not install this OSX86... whenever I try that, I get that error window. What am I doing wrong ? Please, forgive my ignorance and maybe even stupidity, but I really have no clue what to do next.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance and keep up the good work people !

Cheers !

Thank you Rammjet so much, as soon as I'm home, I will try burning it again using slowest possible speed.

I'll post back... in the mean time, if someone has some more clues on what else could cause this behaviour (just in case another "slow" DVD doesn't help), I would greatly appreciate any input.

Thanks again !

As Rammjet says, this is a problem with reading the DVD. It's not unusual and OSX can be picky about its media; I've burned several bad installation DVDs along the way, even though they verify fine on another system.

I didn't see which optical drive option you have in your Gateway and the spec sheet lists several drives, but if you have a DVD burner in there, try using that to create your OSX DVD. Yes, I know you'll have to install Windoze again to do that, but it's worth the effort if you get more coasters from another drive. Typically using the drive that created the disk to install OSX is more likely to work than one from another machine.

One final thought - did you MD5 your ISO before burning? Worthwhile, particularly if you have a transient memory problem on the machine you use to burn or download. One case that comes to mind was a machine which downloaded the torrent fine, but during the ftp to another machine for burning the file got corrupted ever so slightly - turned out to be a high memory problem corrupting the transfer.

Hello everybody !

Yes, I know wbout those compatibility problems between different types of drives, but really I've never had any troubles with these two machines (laptop and my desktop) exchanging CDs/DVDs.

The problem with laptop DVD is that it's a combo drive, CD burner, but only DVD player. Can't burn DVDs with that one...

As far as installation of Windows goes, I don't have to do that, it's still on my primary partition, and also I always keep at least 2 backup DVDs (Ghost system images), so in case something terrible happen I can always restore my last perfectly working backup image in no minutes. Besides, as I mentioned in my first post, I cloned complete HD (not just partitions, but whole HD) to my new HD that I just purchased 2 days ago. I put my new HD aside for now, as my primary backup and I won't mess with it. I just bought it in case something heppen to my old HD.

For now, I am trying to get a dual boot (Windows and OSX), so that's why I didn't uninstall Windows.

Regarding the MD5... checksum number is C360C06F53E1BCCDA779B816800F99FD

I have no clue on what it's supposed to be because I didn't download it from some torrent site, but I've got it through my friend's FTP access.

Original file name is macosx10.4.4.install.dvd.jas.iso

Little update... not good though...

I burned two other DVDs, slowest speed possible (2x) and same thing keeps happening. Have no clue what's going on. I gave those DVDs to neighbour and he tried to install it on his laptop and guess what ? Same thing happened again.

So I'm starting to believe that something's really wrong with this installation.

Cheers!

Looks like your iso file is corrupt. Try downloading it (or another one) again.

Yes my friend, you were 100% right. Something was indeed wrong with the ISO file (not with DVD because I burned another 3 DVDs with different software at different speed - Nero, MagicISO).

I've got another file, but this time it was MacOSX_10.4.6DVDPATCHED_Myz.iso

I am so happy to say that it looks like it's working this time. I am in the middle of installation right now (on my laptop, not on this desktop of course, otherwise I wouldn't be able to post this, lol). Here is few pics:

I'll post back if everything went OK. Thanks people !

Internet is up and running, I just wasn't able to establish my wireless connection, but once I plugged my cable from my router in, everything started to work (at least wired connection).

Anyway, I still have some troubles with sound (no sound) and sometimes I can see some small "artifacts" when I open some window and move my pointer. Where pointer used to be just a second ago, I can see small square, different collor than the desktop. When I click on something on the desktop, square just disapears. I believe it has something to do with drivers for my ATI Radeon Mobility. Also inside the Display properties I see that only resolution listed is 1024x768, and my widescreen laptop is capable of showing 1440x900 pixels (in Windows).

My Video card specs:

M675PIR is ATI M10-P graphics processor with resolution of 1440×900

2D hardware acceleration

3D rendering acceleration

My Sound card specs:

PCI interface audio

Multi-stream Direct Sound and Direct Sound 3D acceleration

SoundBlaster Pro, MIDI, Windows Sound System compatible, MP3, WMA

S/PDIF output for PCM or AC-3 content through mini-DIN on notebook or through Toslink jack on port replicator

PCI Power Management Interface (PPMI) 1.1 compliant

Is there anyone out there who has some info on where could I get proper drivers or is it even possible to solve this problem with sound and video ?

Thanks in advance !
