flynflip
Hello, Mr. Obvious. First time poster, long time listener. OK, I have been in the hackintosh scene for a while. This machine was what got me started. I started reading and installed Kalyway 10.5.2 to it some time ago and have been addicted since. Have built NUMEROUS machines since. To the point... Having had compatibility issues with 10.5.2, I decided to upgrade to Snow Leo 10.6.8 I have read posts from folks with this or similar mobos having success. Though some said they were able to go vanilla, I read a post that says the mobos with no AHCI setting needs to use AMD methods of installation. I have no AHCI settings. I was able to get 10.6 installed using Nacoms bootCD with a retail disc. However, I had no LAN. I used ##### and installed the Linx2Mac Realtek kext package. I forget my reasoning, but I then installed the Realtek Gigabit Ethernet 2.0.6 from #####. My problems were that when my connection would work, it was VERY VERY slow. To get it to work after a reboot, I would need to clear the cache (Rebuild cache/Repair Permissons.) Then the SLOW port would kick in. So, I decided to go ahead and install the combo updates one at a time until I got to 10.6.8 (As I needed to download them from my other computer because the net was so slow on that machine.) I got all the way to 10.6.7 installing the combo updates and the corresponding kernels from Nawcom. All good. Then I installed 10.6.8 and Nawcom's 10.8.0 kernel. The spinning pinwheel of doom!!! So, I boot with -f -v flags and notice that it seems to be in an infiinite loop with com_apple_driver_rtl8139. So, I try safe mode (-x flag) VOILA! Im in. So I delete every realtek related kext and reboot. Same thing. Back into safe mode and deleted IONetworkingFamily.kext (OF COURSE I BACKED IT UP!) and rebooted with -f -v and now I don't hang on the realtek kext, but I still hang. It gets past the verbose text and then hits a black screen with a type of cursor in the top left corner and hangs there and flickers. So I am still able to get into safe mode. HMmmmMMMmmmm. So, I am at a loss on how to diagnose the problem. Obviously whatever the problem, safe mode isn't loading it. So, how can I differentiate between regular vs. safe mode and hit everything one at a time to find the problem. Or maybe someone has a great idea. I'm up for trying something new. Anyway, my specs. This is actually an OEM emachines W5233. It has the ECS ecs 945gct-m3 (Pentium D) though it has the emachines BIOS. I have read of people using modded BIOS, but couldn't find clear information and I don't screw with BIOS unless I am 100% Specs from ECS Website Intel ® 945GC & ICH7 º North Bridge: Intel ® 945GC º South Bridge: Intel ® ICH7 º Integrated Intel ® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 ( GMA950 ) 1GB DDR2 º Supported by Intel ® ICH7 • 2 x Ultra DMA100/66 devices • 4 x Serial ATA 3.0Gb/s devices º Realtek ALC655 6-channel audio CODEC (optional) º Realtek RTL8110SC Giga LAN Controller º Realtek RTL8100C 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet Controller(optional) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/274311-ecs-945gct-m3-1068-booting-issues/ Share on other sites
flynflip
OK, I have tried disabling LAN adapter completely in BIOS. Nothing. I tried stealing IONetworkingFamily.kext from another working 10.6.8 hack I have. Then it's back to the com_apple_driver_rtl8139 infinite error loop. Uggg. I'm out of ideas. Anything from anybody would be better than what I have now. I can't help but think this is a kext issue because i can boot into safe mode. But why 10.6.8? All of the rest of the combo updates booted fine. Or maybe it is Nawcom's kernel? Suggestions would be appreciated. flynflip
Amazed no one has any ideas. I have decided to start from scratch as my network kexts that I applied is what I believe the problem is. I would have liked to know a little more about troubleshooting, but I would like to get this machine working even more. I just reinstalled 10.6 and networking works out of the box. I don't know why i didn't last time. I will apply the combo updates and post back. osteneightysix
I've had the same problem with extremely slow ethernet although it happened under my RTL 8139. Try this... it worked for me. It's just a modified AppleRTL8139 btw. What was odd for me is that this problem only occurred after I updated to 10.6.8. If you can't boot just insert your installation DVD and open a terminal. Type this... cd /Volumes/[Name of your HD]/System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/ rm -r RTL* You should be able to boot now. IONetworkingFamily.kext.zip Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/274311-ecs-945gct-m3-1068-booting-issues/#findComment-1784404 Share on other sites

I have already started reinstalling though. I am at 10.6.6 with 10.6.7 combo update installer running. Everything is working great so far. Network is quick. Something must have went wrong the first time around. I am crossing my fingers on that 10.6.8 update. If it fails, I will try your suggestion. I appreciate you replying and I will keep you up to date. Take care. flynflip
Well, I reinstalled and got the same thing. I noticed along the way, that 10.6.6 seemed to work fairly well, so I decided to go back through the process stopping there. Now I am sitting at 10.6.6 and my LAN adapter isn't working at all. Pretty frustrating. I tried osteneightysix's suggestions with no success. I am going to try to work the bugs out of 10.6.6 and stay with it though. I can't play a youtube video full screen or OSX crashes. I have the transparent menu bar so I have QE/CI, but I only have one resolution to choose from. I will try hard coding a resolution that is better fitting, but I need to solve the crash problem as this machine is being used as a media center. I am reading up on dsdt edits which will probably be the solution. I will keep posted. Suggestions, of course, are welcome and appreciated. LatinMcG
post your dsdt and ioregistry. theres 2 common issues for 10.6.8 and lion not booting properly. smbios.plist missing crucial info or wrong model. or dsdt Device (PCI0) is missing _UID under it. if it is. replace _ADR with _UID for Device (PCI0) ONLY! one more thing. the realtek 2./0.6 gave me problems with no wake.. i had to use lnx2mac v .68 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/274311-ecs-945gct-m3-1068-booting-issues/#findComment-1784958 Share on other sites
