No Apple boot screen

I got some OSX 10.4.6 dvd, not sure by who. It works great, installs fine, boots fine, but... during regular boot at the darwin promt i get a black screen with text that zips by, before it loads the GUI.

This is not in -x Safe Boot, and I have no idea why the gray apple boot screen is missing. Does any one else have this problem and is there any way to fix this?
