Hi,

I have been researching all over the place and I understand some terminology now, but I am just having a hard time putting the big picture together. How do i install OS X Lion next to my windows 7 OS??

I have a compatible computer for sure, I checked compatibility.

Here is what I have:

First hard drive is 450GB: I have my windows 7 OS on C:, then I made a 100gb slot for OS X Lion. After that I am storing some old stuff on last partition.

Second HD is a salvaged drive from my old HP, 160GB: I am storing newer stuff.

Can I install OS X Lion into my 100gb unallocated partition??

Your partitioning scheme is (quite) a bit messy.

If I were you I'd move C and E to the beginning of the HDD and then create a new primary partition for OS X. Of course by doing so you'll need to use MBR to install OS X.

Use Parted Magic: http://partedmagic.com/doku.php

Warning: moving partitions can take a very long time.

Besides, before moving a partition, you should back it up.

Yes it is doable but there are several steps involved in order to boot it. Your main problem will be how you build your install usb stick without an existing os x installation and the fact that you will almost certainly need a modified installer capable of installing to mbr partitioned disks, but assuming you pass those hurdles you 'should' be fine but will need to do the following..

1 - install easybcd 2 onto your windows drive and add a bootloader option for Lion using the MBR option (this wont do anything other than show the boot option at this stage - it wont work until after you finish step 6)

2 - using your lion boot / install media boot setup and format the target partition as mac journalled and continue to install Lion to this patition (you will need a modified mbr installer unless your existing drive is already partitioned as guid)

3 - once install is complete you will need to boot into your newly installed lion system using your boot / install media and install any kexts, dsdt etc that your specific system needs

4 - from within your new lion installation download and install chameleon wizard.

5 - run chameleon wizard and select either Boot0hfs or Boot0md (see which one works for you) and be sure to select the correct partition to install it to.

6 - reboot and use the newly available boot option (created in step 1) to try and boot lion

7 - if it doesnt work reboot into your new installation using your lion boot / install media and repeat step 5 and select a different option from chameleon wizard and try again

Thats a very rough around the edges set of instructions and although I believe it should work it may well not (I have done it this way a few times because I didnt want to mess around formatting or backing up drives to shift the partitions around). If you give it a try then best of luck :D

It'd be much easier to just dedicate one HD to OSX, and a 2nd HD to Windows.

Then use the F11 key (or whatever your particular motherboard uses) to select the boot drive.

And: the bios setup allows choosing the default boot drive.

Of course, running with 2 hard drives is more difficult when using a laptop computer.

OSX can also boot from an external USB HD. So that's another possible configuration.

I have two hard drives. One 160gb for Windows 7 only, and my 1tb for Lion and Files for Both Systems to share. Steps i took.

1. Convert Windows 7 for ahci mode. Google the how-to.

2. UNplug that hard drive to not corrupt boot loader.

3. Install iatkos or w/e on the 1tb hard drive using MBR. I used Chimera

4. After installation plug other hard drive back in and make sure that the drive with Chimera on it is first priority.

5. Press any button at the Bootloader screen and the other partition without a name should be windows 7.

6. Win.

Well, I might be wrong, but if you have installed your Windows while the SATA mode in BIOS was set to IDE, then I 'm afraid this partition scheme won't work.

I faced this issue with my first hackintosh and I had to re-partition the whole HDD after setting the SATA mode to AHCI so you can get a bootable MBR for OSX deployment. If you only changed the SATA mode you may get to boot with OSX but I doubt Windows will ever boot.

Dont give wrong information.

I personally followed that it works 100%. I just never boot into windows any more because I like Hackintosh much much much better.
