ATI causes "Gray Fog" on boot

Scenario: I use -x to avoid KP and get past Apple boot screen only to wind up at a gray screen with working mouse. It is like a fog under which Snow Leopard 10.6.8 is running. So, I type my login (since I am in safe mode), and hit enter. Wait for the processes to run - I can't see them, but wait until the PC activity light stops blinking - and reboot without any flags and I get in to the desktop and SL works fine except for no DVD (will work on that when boot up is stable).

I have a feeling it is the Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD6850 card not loading properly. I could be wrong. I have the correct kexts loaded and have QE CI and dual monitors working. My card shows up as ATI Radeon HD NI40 in System Properties. If it is not affecting the performance or boot up, then I can live with that. Have read a little about flashing the card ROM but have never done that and need some guidance if you folks think it will help.

Here's my Chameleon boot plist in case that helps.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

<plist version="1.0">

<key>Kernel Flags</key>

<string>arch=i386 npci=0x2000 darkwake=0 PCIRootUID=1</string>

<key>Legacy Logo</key>

I'm open to any suggestions - though not too crazy about the idea of reinstalling from scratch a fourth time.
