TheDub
Hello guys and gals, First off I hope this is in the right forum as I'd hate for my first post to come off negatively. I have been running Hackintosh for a few years now, I'm currently on 10.5.8 with a AMD x2 and it's been so rock solid it has been my PC's only operating system. A few specs worth noting as my question goes on: 9.7.0 Qoopz? Kernel - On the fly patching EFI Strings supported with nVidia card. R1000 Ethernet ALC888 (Azalia Kext) Audio GA-MA770-DS3 Motherboard - SB700/770? - All functional I've been mostly content and happy with Leopard, and for the most part continue to be, but now that it's two versions behind and I'm seeing a few apps beginning to leave Leopard in computing history the question arises. Is Snow Leopard finally patched enough to support AMD with the level of elegance and stability Leopard can? I've taken to Google in look for an answer, and while I'm comfortable doing the install and have found guides for learning the new parts (also got Leopard on a flash drive with my main system drive backed up 100% with Disk Utility), I haven't found a whole lot of real deep information regarding how it functions from a stability and practicality stand point. Lots of install guides and lots of "Check out my L33t snow leopard amd hackintosh" videos, but nothing that helps me with my inevitable decision. So I wanted to ask just a few quick questions for you AMD users out there that YouTube videos and tutorials just aren't answering sufficiently for me. I hope you'll take the time to help a guy out. 1.)What Install method did you use? (Distro/Retail/What version?/What Bootloader?) 2.)What kernel are you using and is On the Fly CPUID patching or Boot Time CPUID patching possible and working correctly? 3.)How stable is the system? I'd rather keep a stable Leopard then have a unstable Snow Leopard. 4.)Any other qualms with AMD? I know Leopard can't utilize more then 4GB of RAM on AMD, can Snow Leopard? 5.)Any advice for me in general? Stick with Leopard? or you're missing all the fun get up to Snow? I really appreciate any feedback you can provide and thanks for being such a great community! I have not been active myself but if it wasn't for all the great talent here my PC might never have met OS X. johnjr08
I think the easiest way to install Snow Leopard on AMD would be to use iAtkos S3 v2 and then update to 10.6.8, don't reboot, install Nawcom's 10.6.8 legacy kernel, and then reboot. TheDub
I think the easiest way to install Snow Leopard on AMD would be to use iAtkos S3 v2 and then update to 10.6.8, don't reboot, install Nawcom's 10.6.8 legacy kernel, and then reboot. I was just looking at that one. My go to "fully updated" install media for Leopard has been iAtkos v7. So the Qoopz Kernel and Nawcome kernel both support on the fly cpuid patching similar to Leopard's 9.7.0 kernel? From what I can gather that would be a yes but just making sure. Do you run AMD? How's the stability? Thanks for taking the time to respond. Appreciate it! johnjr08
I used to run Snow Leopard on an AMD laptop, but I recently got a new intel computer. It was very stable. Some multi-core AMD processors go out of sync, and make the machine very unstable, but there is an easy fix for that found here. I'm really not sure about the "on the fly cpuid patching" you're talking about though. Well - Last time I played with Snow Leopard there was the issue of having to manually run Marvin's AMD Utility to patch the applications, such as iTunes, to be more AMD friendly by fixing a CPUID mismatch. - At the time there were no kernels other then a (modbin_test?) which was very experimental. My OSX86 terminology is a bit rusty but is a "Legacy Kernel" another way of saying AMD/P4/SSE2/ETC Kernel?
