Jacob Kay
Hey guys. I'll be doing this (http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=261312) soon with my p8p67 pro soon, but I have a few questions. Firstly, I already have windows 7 installed on my hard drive; can I make another partition and install OSx on that or would I have to do more work? Secondly, is the GTX 570 supported as I have no other graphics cards to use if it doesn't work? Thirdly, I will want to use ubuntu as well so does the boot loader for OSx support it or does GRUB support OSx? Fourthly, do I need a license for Lion or is there a crack or something? First time ever trying OSx, I need it because I will be doing Media work in school on iMacs. Thanks, Jacob_Kay Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/268096-installing-lion-when-windows-7-is-already-installed/ Share on other sites

First time ever trying OSx, I need it because I will be doing Media work in school on iMacs. Thanks, Jacob_Kay you must first buy Snow Leopard and install that, then upgrade it to 10.6.6 minimum, because Lion needs to be bought from the AppStore and this is only in 10.6.6/7/8. Apple is selling it on USB thumdrives, but the system requirements also say you need Snow to be able to install. Also the price for that USB is higher then the price for Snow+Lion together.. and you can make the USB yourself from within Snow. The license of Apple forbids to install Apple OS,ilife and iWork on "non-Apple-branded" hardware. However it is highly questionable if that restriction is juristical valid at all. In Germany and half of Europe it isn't - I am 1000% sure about that. In the U.S. however with their DMCA laws I would be careful. But without a question it is illegal to install stolen Software on any computer, be it a PC or a Mac. So get to the store. To install OSX onto a generic PC you need to obtain some knowledge and also need to add certain drivers and a boot loader, often referred to the name of "chameleon" to the install medium ( or create a boot-cd that boots the Apple Disk ). This is all covered here all over the forums. Don't expect to just pop in the DVD and run some sort of "setup.exe". A double/triple boot with whatever strange 3rd party OS is possible, but the ones running "Windows" on their OSX-converted PCs is small. Simply you will never want to get back to "Windows" once you have seen OSX working.. Facit : It is not that hard but it definitely is not a job you do within minutes if you are new to this. Read, save files you need, investigate your hardware, research device-IDs of your graphics and so on. All that is needed. To run Lion you will need 2Gigs of Ram and a Intel Core2Duo Processor ( not a Core Duo ). Apple is fully 64bit now, without any excuse. And Lion eats Ram like candy. Snow Leopard however runs with half of that plus supports all Intel cpus ( and with a custom kernel will also run on AMDs or Netbook Atoms ). Good Luck. Okay, so I can't just buy Lion and install it - like I did with Windows 7 and installed that without any previous OS? I only need OSx because I will be doing media work in school on macs. I do want Windows, I have used OSx before and I'm not really fond of it. I am also an avid PC gamer with a decent Steam library, and Direct X is Microsoft proprietary so I really want windows 7. I have messed around with linux and done some things which required a load of terminal work, so this can't be that hard. I just need to know how I would go about installing it when I already have windows 7 installed and want to keep it. Do I really need Chameleon? I would much prefer using the ubuntu boot loader called GRUB 2.0, tell me what modifications will be needed and I'll get my linux loving friend to modify it for me. I would be willing to put work into this if I don't have to reinstall windows 7 to dual boot it. I have an Intel core i5 2500k, 4GB of RAM. Thanks, Jacob Kay 1. start in the Newbies section or read the install instructions for specific OSX versions. 2. No you can't obtain legally Lion without having Snow first. 3. Neither grub nor Winload.exe can boot OSX. 4. CPU and Ram will to be fine for Lion. 5. nobody here cares what is happening to your "Windows" : 6. OSX needs a GUID partition scheme and HFS+ partitions . "Windows" does not know anything about that. 7. Data Loss is likely : 8. Your first attempt to install OSX or boot to a usable Desktop is likely to fail. 9. Prepare yourself for some re-installations until all is set. 10. Everything said. Jacob Kay
1. start in the Newbies section or read the install instructions for specific OSX versions.Okay, I'll do that once I buy Snow. 2. No you can't obtain legally Lion without having Snow first. Okay, that means its about £47 which isn't too bad. 3. Neither grub nor Winload.exe can boot OSX. That's okay, I'll use 4. CPU and Ram will to be fine for Lion. Yep 5. nobody here cares what is happening to your "Windows" : Um, okay? 6. OSX needs a GUID partition scheme and HFS+ partitions . "Windows" does not know anything about that. Actually, I'm using a GUID partition scheme which is causing issues with Ubuntu not recognising partitions. 7. Data Loss is likely : 8. Your first attempt to install OSX or boot to a usable Desktop is likely to fail. 9. Prepare yourself for some re-installations until all is set. I would be prepared to put a lot of effort into this. 10. Everything said. Hi, I replied to your points under them in the quote in bold. Always use genuine Mac OS X, or you won't be helped here. Just create a partition and format it mac os journaled (extended). Install lion there and it should work, it did for me. You might have problems booting to windows after the installation but it is easily fixable. Now I can boot both Lion and Win7.
