So I had my hackbook working perfectly last night, and was starting to install programs when I decided it would be a good idea to update to 10.6.6. I had used the iATKOS s3 v2 10.6.3 and after a few tries it booted right into the whole Mac intro video and I was off to configuring my system. It activated the camera on my laptop and I took my goofy pic and was off to the races.

Anywhoo, I downloaded the official Combo Update from apple.com and tried to install it, forgetting about my kexts. I did not install them correctly (as I now know, I just copy/pasted them into a folder) and when I updated it cleared them all out and told me it was doing so. I tried to restart, and it was freezing on boot no matter if i did -s/-v/-x or any combination of them. So I decided to format and try again.

6 hours later I have got it working twice, but both times it cannot find the camera. I have started writing down which options I am selecting for each time I install, but cannot figure out how I got the camera working the 1st time.

Currently, upon re-boot it is opening the OS and immediately giving me a message saying I need to reboot the system. I have rebooted multiple times, even doing hard resets (unplug wall/battery and holding power button for 30sec) and its not working, no matter which boot method I try (-v/-x/-s).

My laptop is a stock Dell Inspiron 1520. I followed the x86 wiki for which drivers to install the first time (or so I thought), but now my camera isn't working.

I have done some google-ing, but cannot figure out if this laptop will support a 64bit install. I tried that after the 2nd time I didn't get the camera working, and now am stuck on the reset screen. When I got everything working the first time I did a 32bit install.

I have been reading about how a 32bit system will not recognize a full upgrade to 4gb of ram, which is why I want the upgrade. It could have been because the ram was a higher speed ram (stock is 667/5300) that was requiring the 64bit, but I could not understand their posts.

So basically, I am asking:

Can my Inspiron 1520 support a 64bit install?

Is there a solution to the reboot screen?

Is there a kext for my camera? (I have since discovered kextinstaller)

Can I upgrade to 4gb of ram (2x 2gb DDR2 667/5300) and have it all recognized?

Thanks in advance!

got it workin again on 32bit, but the camera still doesnt work :D

dunno about internet yet. it has a bad wireless card in it so i need to get a new wireless card ordered here soon, but other than that i think its working pretty well.

now i just need to figure out how to upgrade to 10.6.6 or lion

I wish it was that easy to upgrade but you need to research your hardware. get a good dsdt. And research each update w/ your hardware to make sure the system doesn't break. Good luck. Been working on Lion for a couple weeks still no luck. who knows how many installs to get to 10.6.8..research the forums tons of info
