Hello all, I have to say I have tried getting answers to this on the apple forums but no one seems to have a clue, so I thought I'd find an uber-techie forum!

I have been scanning photos using image capture. When I open them in preview and try to rotate and then save them they come out as grayed out images. I have tried using 'save as' and 'save' and all kinds of things but no joy.

I've just upgraded to snow leopard plus whacked in 4GB of RAM and I'm on an iMac.

I have no idea why this is so problematic, but it's doing my head in, especially as the scanner (epson expression 10000XL) has just cost me a small fortune to buy.

Any help or advice much appreciated. :)

heh, well before I saw this, I tried to convert it to smaller and the image just disappeared altogether, though I still had a 70MB file. which is strange cause the original file was over 170MB.

anyway, I tried scanning it to iPhoto and amazingly, I was able to rotate it and save it! So that seems like it's a solution at least for now.

the uploader is taking forever, so I took a screen shot of what I have ended up with. It would be good to get a proper workaround!

I look forward to hearing any other views as to why this is happening.

ETA: I just opened up an old scan in preview and when I closed it, it asked me to save so I clicked save and lo and behold, it went blank! seems that one cannot save in preview!

OK, just exported from iPhoto to desktop and after opening in preview I could rotate and save. No loss of image! It's a bit of a drag, but at least we can finally use the scanner.

would still like to know why we have to go through this palaver though.

wow, what a prize for the epson expression 10000XL :(

you should try this with other scan/image software " MacUpdate ! Software Database !

and look for errors about preview.app with ' /Applications/Utilities/Console.app '.

what if you ' scan to PDF ' ? is there the same behaviour ?

testing your NEW RAM is also not a bad idea RAM Tester !

nice picture by the way :D

good luck!

Hi there, thanks for the the link to other software. I've heard of silverfast and I think I'm going to look into that even though scanning to iPhoto is seemingly working.

Not sure how I find the errors through the console app (I'm really really not very good with computers which is why I use a Mac!).

I hadn't thought of saving as a PDF, mostly because we need to be able to work on the images later by adding watermarks, re-touching etc.

I had no idea I could test RAM so I'll do that today, though generally it seems to be much faster than before. Even before I updated to snow leopard it was faster.

and thank you on the compliment for the picture. I think?

:P

Rember gave me this:

All tests passed!

Total built-in memory: 4 GB

This is the total amount of physical memory that the computer has installed. If this figure is not showing the correct amount of memory there may be a problem with one or more installed DIMMS.

Available memory: 1378 MB

Available memory is the amount of physical memory that is currently not in use by any other processes. All available memory will be used for testing when the "All" option is selected. To increase the amount of available memory, you can restart your computer before testing. If you are familiar with the command line (CLI), you can run memtest (the core of Rember) in single-user mode. See Rember help, or http://www.memtestosx.org for more information.

Requested amount: All MB

The total amount of memory requested for testing by the Rember application. Not all requested memory can be allocated for testing. See information on "Available memory" for more information.

Memory allocated for testing: 1378 MB

This is the total amount of memory that memtest was able to allocate for testing. See "Available memory" section for more information.

-------

Loops selected: 1

Total loops selected by user for testing. All loops should complete when testing is successful. Test failure when the "Continue on Error" preference is selected will cancel tests before this number of loops has been completed. Users can also cancel testing before this number is reached.

Loops completed: 1

Total loops completed by memtest. Note that the Rember is not always able to identify how many loops ran. If there are discrepancies between this and the loops selected, the log should be examined to determine exactly how many loops were performed.

-------

Total execution time: All tests passed! Execution time: 1228 seconds

This is the total amount of time that it took to execute the selected tests. Execution time may vary from system to system, and is provided as a guide for determining how long users can expect tests to run based on the amount of memory installed on the system.

Testing start time: 2011-08-24 17:57:55 +0100

Testing end time: 2011-08-24 18:18:25 +0100

Rember version: 0.3.7b Memtest version: 4.22

In the opening box I selected test all memory, but I did have safari running.

you're Welcome,

is the Scanner connected via USB or FireWire ?

please try both ( not at the same time ), if possible.

your RAM seems ok!

it seems also that the Scanner has the Silverfast Software included.

did you try this with Silverfast, too ?

i hope the circuitous way with iPhoto is not to circumstantially.

sorry for my bad english

good luck :D
