video card suggestion for Lion (working with 64-bit kernel)?

I currently have an nVidia GeForce 6600 card with Lion (and had it with SL), and I cannot get it to work in 64-bit mode. I can only use it in 32-bit mode, or else I get a kernel panic. It's also old which makes animations extremely slow.

So, I am looking to replace it. I'd like the video card to have absolutely smooth video for normal application use (no gaming). Switching desktops, launch pad, etc... should all be smooth.

Are there any good and widely supported video cards for me to achieve this for <$100 ? I have a PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot.

look here OSX86 Wiki !

IMHO, AMD 5870 is a good choice for you and works oob ;)

good luck ;)

thanks for the suggestion and wiki link! unfortunately that card blows my budget out of the water, but i'll look at the wiki also

I ended up purchasing this card: MSI R5670-PD512 Radeon HD 5670 512MB 128-bit GDDR5

It has worked out flawlessly. Required no hacking at all, worked straight out of the box and is extremely smooth with Lion

Do you think that Asus Radeon HD5670 1GB GDDR5 will work ?

thanks

I'm pretty sure it would, it seems like what matters most is that the chipset (HD 5670) is supported. My card doesn't show up as MSI or anything, it simply shows up as ATI 5670
