nuclear_eclipse
OK - I followed this guide on setting up 10.4.6 on my laptop. It's a Dell XPS M140, with an Intel 915M video card, and it was working perfectly out of the box using this fix to the VGA-out to get Aqua to come up each time. Now, it was working fine and dandy, even the resolution, which MacOS correctly detected as 1280x800. However, because of the VGA-out issue, it was trying to use a second monitor, and was in side-by-side mode rather than mirrored. So I decided to 'fix' that by going to system prefs -> displays and checking the 'mirror' option. Now everything is screwed up. Right after I changed to mirrored, the resolution on my laptop screen dropped to 800x600, I got a blank light blue screen (same as when waiting during install), and nothing but a mouse cursor. When I try to restart the system, the same thing happens, and Aqua never comes back up - all I ever get is the mouse cursor. What I'm asking is this: how do I fix my mistake? Is there a way to have this in mirrored mode without being stuck at 800x600, or is the easiest option to go back to side-by-side mode and just live with it that way? And above all else, how do I get Aqua to start working again?! I have the system in a triple-boot with Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP, not to mention Live CDs of both *nix and BartPE, so accessing the MacOS drive without being in Mac is a non-issue. Can anyone give me some information on how to get this beast back out of the blue-screen grave without reinstalling MacOS from scratch? Thank you all in advance. nuclear_eclipse
Nobody has any ideas, suggestions, or answers? I'd really like to get this resolved, and I would really like to avoid the need to reinstall. At the very least, I'd like to know what *file* I need to look through.... bsod
i'm not sure how to get it back from mirrored to the two displays (one real and one phantom when booting with the vga hack) but if you can get it back to side by side, what you want to do it take the clips out of the external monitor and goto system prefs -> display and try to detect diplays after taking out the clips. the screen should flash and then it will come up as one 1280x800 display on your laptop.... hope that helps.. edit: also you might want to try a dummy vga dongle instead of the paper clips... http://tvtool.info/go.htm?http://tvtool.in...ish/dummy_e.htm it is a lot more convienent to take out and put in Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/26561-video-in-1046-was-working/#findComment-181012 Share on other sites
nuclear_eclipse
Thanks for the info guys. I've got things working now, and I'm just going to leave things as a multi-desktop system for now, since the wires are easy to add/remove (they aren't paperclips, they're wires from a breadboard circuit kit). Things are working again, and I appreciate the tips you've offered. Cheers.
