when you boot, enter -s (to boot in single user mode) and enter "Graphics Mode"="1024x768x32@60"

 

You can change the refresh rate, for exemple

"Graphics Mode"="1024x768x32@75" but that doesn't work on all systems (mine for exemple, my refresh rate stays at 60 hertz :s )
