it happened with me and it was related to the vga card kext + the fakesmc 'follow the usb method and include those 2 to ur E/E folder + use GraphicsEnabler=no in ur boot.plist file and u should be able to setup normaly'

-btw the gray screen shouldnt take more than a 20 sec or so ,so anything more than a couple of mins _be sure there is something missing.

Hello. Up until today, I was having the same problem. I would receive a gray Apple loading window after installing the and older combo update and ###### or a kernel panic after installing 10.6.8 combo update. Here's what you need to do for Snow Leopard:

1. Before you attempt to install the 10.6.8 combo update, you need to install The ####### update helper. It can be found here: ######## . Update helper is required for Sandy Bridge motherboards/ processors when installing 10.6.8.

2. After you install Update Helper. Reboot your machine with your boot CD. Boot back into your Mac HD.

3. Open ####### , but don't install it. Leave the window idle in the background. Install the 10.6.8 update. After it installs, do not reboot. Install ######. In the ######## settings choose, #####+System Utilities.

4. Once it finishes, reboot your machine without the boot CD. This is what worked for me. I am able to boot into OSX 10.6.8 normally.

My rig is a:

Motherboard: Asus P8H61-M LE CSM Rev. B3

Processor: Intel Core i5 2300

RAM: 8GB
