Hello! :)

I'm in the process of trying to change over from Linux to OSX.

I have used Linux for 11+ years and have decided that I need to do things that are just too much trouble with Linux.

I am having problems getting to my files on my Linux disks after it took a dive though that's a whole other issue.

I do have a LOT of things on it that I have to retrieve and bring into the new system but they are ext4 and OS X ignores them. :(

So basically I am up on 10.6.6i (Hazard) but there are some issues.

It will not boot from the hard disk. I have to boot from the DVD then over ride it and tell it to boot from the hard disk. Once it's booted I can remove the DVD.

I have a GTS 450 Nvidia card that it doesn't seem too impressed with.

It doesn't like my audio either.

It ignores my Canon camera when I plug it in via USB but it will read the memory card when I plug it directly into the USB memory card reader thing.

Preview will not display any images. It just shows a blank box. I ~assume~ this is related to the Nvidia problem.

It does not see the Windows 7 shares on my lan from my home theater pc.

Also related to the graphics (I assume) it doesn't give me any display options except 1024x768 (totally unacceptable)

A MAJOR plus is that it fully recognizes my iPhone and totally communicates with it, lets me back it up, get stuff out of it, etc.. This is a huge, huge plus as far as I'm concerned. :D

In the past I have experimented with OS X and had mixed results.

I had an OS X version that was labeled Kalyway (SP?) that when I installed it, it worked with my Nvidia GTS 9800 (older card I had at that time), worked with the audio just fine, saw the windows shares on my lan, had no problems displaying images, etc... BUT, it did not at all recognize my iPhone or even the USB ports at all. USB was totally ignored and non-functional and that was a deal breaker.

I have tried different versions of OS X off and on over the past several years but have not found one yet that 100% works with everything I have.

The system I have is

Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6

Intel CORE2 Quad Q8400 @3ghz

4gb DDR2 ram

Nvidia GTS 450 1gb (EVGA)

2tb disk (new)

DVD burner

Sceptre LCD (I can't see the sticker on it) it was running like 1400 x something on Linux

I really could use some advice and guidance in getting my new system fully operational.

I guess the big question is, can this be easily fixed or do I need to start over using a different copy of OSX?

Or should I use the newer Lion version? I read that it has problems with things like Flash and graphics but I really don't know what I'm talking about so I'm open to being schooled. I'm far from being an expert but I'm not completely brain dead. Hacking into the system files and stuff like that is not something I know anything about so if there is a way to avoid that that would be best.

(edit: corrected the CPU, had the wrong one listed)

Thanks! :)

I am not going to suggest in the slightest that I am experienced enough to offer any meaningful advice but I will offer this...

I would, if possible, put aside the Hazrd or the iAtkos type of SL DVD's and invest in a copy of SL retail DVD. You could buy one from ebay if needed. The latest version is 10.6.3 and this will upgrade nicely to 10.6.8. Then again so will the 10.6 version.

Along with the retail DVD I would also grab a copy of ##### and #####. Also get yourself a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner - this might well turn out to be the most valuable piece of software that you could have, especially if you have an extra HD to clone a working copy of your OS to before you make any potentially radical changes that you are unable to recover from.

Then once you have the above sit back and do some reading and watch some vids on Youtube to understand what processes are involved to make the above work for your config. Also whilst accumulating the above software read about creating a DSDT file and what that means when using the DSDT autopatcher application (another one to look for). This is used along with ##### and whilst not vital it can make the config of your system much easier.

I could go into some detail, not much as I do not have enough experience and skill to help others, of specifics to your system but, ultimately, I really do believe that you will be much much better of with the combination of software and utilities that I have noted. I do not wish to overwhelm you so have a think and read about what I have written and consider the virtues of no longer needing the iAtkos or Hazard type of DVD's.

Using the above I have gone from a 10.6.3 install to then upgrade to 10.6.8 to then purchase a copy of Lion and successfully upgrade to 10.7 and all is now working a treat. However the CCC software I noted has been invaluable to me in being able to do this if I needed to restore my cloned copy of SL.

You might be lucky and get someone along who will guide you through what you need to do with the type of DVD you are using but if not then please consider what I have written as the upgrade path is much easier.

Good luck :)
