hammo
HowTo: Get WinXP Working 'Right' on a Mac Pro Created: 8/30/06 ________________________________________________ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ 0. Why? Well, there's no real definitive reason WHY you should do this but, of course, if you have a Mac Pro, access the HD often, and would like much better performance while in Windows, this should help. Additionally, this is, so far, the only way to get Windows to run the SATA drives in DMA mode on a Mac Pro. By following these steps you'll be able to get HD transfer rates at an average of 60MB/s, as opposed to the 3MB/s you get in PIO mode. 1. Getting Started To get Windows running on a Mac Pro, in DMA mode, you're going to need a couple things: - A working windows box - - > This could very well be your initial XP installation from Boot Camp As well as: - Windows XP w/ SP2 - nLite ( http://www.nliteos.com/ ) - .NET Framework ( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/ ) - Nero, ImgBurn or another burning program. - Intel 5000x Chipset Driver* - Intel 631xESB SATA Driver** 2. Slipstreaming Your Windows CD In Windows, install the .NET Framework, nLite and the burning programs. Create a folder on the Desktop named 'XP' (or anything else). Go to My Computer, right-click on the CD-Rom drive and select 'Explore'. Copy all of the files into the folder XP, located on the desktop. Unzip the Intel Driver .zips and put them in directories on the desktop, as follows: IntelDrivers/ --> IntelDriverA/ ------> Unzip the 32-bit folder here (SATA Drivers) --> IntelDriverB/ ------> Unzip everything here (Chipset Drivers) Now, run nLite and follow the instructions, shown here: http://www.nliteos.com/guide/ (be sure to check the box for "create ISO Image") When you reach the part of nLite where you are allowed to integrate drivers, select the "Insert" tab, followed by the "Multiple Driver Folder". Now, select the folder named "IntelDrivers" that we created earlier; select "All" and continue***. Another window will appear, select ESB2 SATA Raid Controller and Intel, TXT-iaStore_ESB2, HDC, 5.6.2.1002 01/16/2006. Continue and let nLite do its thing. Finally, burn the .ISO image that nLite created, load Boot Camp (1.1b), create the Drivers CD, create a new partition and start your installation. Enjoy! 3. There is no problem doing this and it might save you some time. 4. Credits Everyone over at the MacRumors forum, Terrabit for coming up with the original fix, and Apple for, well, being Apple. Tom H
Terrabit provides the definitive solution to this SATA slowdown problem at his site. I have put up another site to document the process with lots of screenshots. I hope this helps!
