I have a stable gigabyte osx install running 10.6.8 and have been running osx on non mac hardware since the early P4 days. I recently converted a close friend from windows to osx.

He has an MSI p55-cd53. I have everything working stable and great for him, except for one annoying problem that I've been trying to trouble shoot for a few weeks now. His sound will cut out sometimes. it might be a few minutes it might be an hour. I've tried a bunch of things to narrow it down but I'm stumped. The chipset is ALC889 on that board. His mic will still work on skype (I can hear him) etc but he can no longer hear any system sound until a reboot. I currently have him using the ##### legacy 889 kext in e/e with the 10.6.2 rollback. He's running 10.6.8. He absolutely loves OSX but this problem is starting to make him think about just going back to windows because of the hassle. God I hope not as I had to constantly fix issues for him on windows.

Please help!

any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same audio chipset on a UD7 board. The AppleHDA hacks I've done previously don't work in 10.6.8. Apple has changed the audio system over to how it's going to work in Lion, which has introduced some fairly large changes.

There is a guy posting fixes on kexts.com. His solutions have worked for me in the Lion betas. He has one posted for ALC889 under 10.6.8, but I have not tried it yet.

The only other solution I can suggest is to go back to 10.6.7.
