Ok, so ive used the retail DVD and ##### to install SL on my Asus laptop..and it installs perfect. Everything functions 100% out of the box. Gull graphics, full trackpad usage, wireless, everything.

However, anytime I try and install a bootloader, I brick my install OR it overwrites parts of the OS and makes things like my audio, video, Trackpad, wireless, keyboard not function. Ive used various flavours of Chameleon and #####, all to no avail.

I can book using ##### just fine, but dont want to have to have to use a DVD everytime I restart!

Ive done some searching around, but its hard to find the right search strings to get an answer to this, and all install guides seem to end with "And now it boots fine!"

Any thoughts?

A Chameleon boot loader consists of/from different parts, each part is important. These parts are:

 • boot loader files (boot0, boot1h, boot)
 • /Extra folder with all contents (com.apple.Boot.plist, SMBIOS.plist (optional))
 • /Extra/Extensions folder where extensions go (this folder is most important for you as you need to copy only certain extensions that are needed for you particular system)
 • /Extra/Themes folder where GUI theme(s) is/are located

The above things, in one way or another, are located in any boot CD (like ##### or other). The fact that only ##### can boot your PC, probably means that it contains the right combination of components for your PC. Basically you need to explore the CD and copy needed components (most likely /Extra folder) to HDD together with latest Chameleon version install.

Other bootloaders will boot my PC just fine normally. Like I used to have a hacked version of 10.6.4 on there, and used chameleon fine. I can install chameleon as a bootloader with this retail version, or #####, but what Im saying is it does more than act as just a bootloader, it start messing with other parts of my install.

10.6 Retail works flawlessly on my machine. I can software update from apple no problem, etc. Its when I try and add a bootloader thats not on a disc that it becomes an issue because these bootloader installs are doing other things to my Retail install like you would need to do to a hacked install.

I need a bootloader to not touch my install..just be the gateway to my SL Retail install. I dont need it to switch off functionality that may be troublesome for some boards or anything that like, SL works perfectly as is on my ASUS.

that being said, im giving the chameleon manual install a try and Ill see what happens. I just wanted to make sure i wasnt missing something obvious first.

Thanks!

Chameleon (for the most part) does what it is configured to do. Its behavior depends on what extensions are present in /E/E, what is set in com.apple.Boot.plist, how SMBIOS.plist is configured, what ACPI tables are present (how these tables are configured - esp. DSDT.aml) in /Extra folder etc... Also different Chameleon versions may provide different functionality, so chose the one with features needed.

I suspect you need to configure the above to be your-system-specific.

My thoughts follow:

Well one size does not fit all and I hate to burst your bubble but when you boot using ##### you are running with a configuration determined by that version of #####. When you install a boot loader, then you are booting to the configuration actually installed on the machine. Most current boot loaders provide a set of extended functionality. This extended functionality is controlled by the boot arguments entered either manually or read from the com.apple.Boot.plist and smbios.plist files found in the /Extra folder.

Guard your copy of ##### as there are many versions and not all will function the same way on a given machine. The ##### established environment is whats makes you think your machine is nearly 100%.

If you are willing and able to learn the computer science required to make informed decisions as it relates to hacking your laptop, then have it. The information is here, it is just not organized very well and does take some effort.

neil

Ahh, ok. I had more of a concept of the bootloader just being something that the computer read to recognize the OS, and then the full install of the OS took over..I didnt realize they were so ingrained with eachother.

Now, If i can just have ##### on my computer without using the DVD..haha.

Ill try and copy some files from ##### into a manual chameleon install or something and see what happens..

Thanks!
