Hey everyone, I'm currently on a working Windows 7 desktop installation, but I'd like to be able to run OSX, preferably as affordably and hassle-free as possible. I'll be using this computer for graphic design work, so it shouldn't be totally low-end, but it doesn't need to be top of the line, either.

Here are the parts I have now. I'm hoping to swap out as few of these existing parts as necessary, and for affordable and easily-compatible parts where I can. What do you recommend?

Processor: Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 revision 1.0

Hard drives: Two Seagate SATA-II drives, one 320GB and one 250GB

RAM: 4GB A-Data DDR2-800 (400MHz)

Monitor: Asus VH198 1440x900x32

Sound: Realtek ALC883 @ Intel 82801HB ICH8

Wireless: MSI PC60G 802.11g PCI Turbo Wireless

Video card: EVGA Geforce 8600GT (Edit: Nice catch)

I'm pretty sure the motherboard and wireless card need to go, but my biggest stumbling block in installation so far has been SATA and AHCI. If you need any other details, just say so. I appreciate any advice you can give!

It should work.

Make sure your OS X hard drive is connected to the ICH8 SATA controller. Look in your motherboard manual to see which ports belong to which controller - if the board has more than one...most Gigabyte boards have a secondary JMicron controller.

Not sure what the deal is with ICH8 but it looks like you need this:

You could also try AppleIntelPIIATA.kext and use the ICH8 in IDE/PATA mode instead if native SATA.

Use Chameleon 2.0 RC5.

For the video card you can use GraphicsEnabler=y in /Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist. You will probably have to add PciRoot=1 as well since you have a Gigabyte board. Use the monitor output that's closest to the motherboard when looking directly at the back of the case. Use a DVI-VGA adapter if you have to.

Use a MacPro3,1 smbios.plist in /Extra. Use the forum search to find one.

I think what's been giving me trouble is the fact that I'm trying to boot from an external hard drive. I was able to do that before with OSx86 on my laptop, but trying to reconfigure it to work with my desktop hardware isn't working so far. Is it possible to boot from an external when I have SATA internal drives, or am I going to have to install it on one of the internals?
