mrderp
After about a week of failed installs and bootloops, I finally was able to install iATKOS s3 v2 onto my Dell XPS Gen4 desktop. Everything works amazingly well for a computer from 2004, but I'm having some network problems. Im using an on board Broadcom NetExtreme 5751 with the patched AppleBCM5751 kext. The kext makes the OS see my card, but the MAC address is all zeros. I know how to change the MAC address in the terminal but the computer locks up after typing the the command and pressing enter. I even tried to use a prog named MacDaddyX(I believe), but the computer still locks up. After about two days of frustration I purchased a Belkin N150(f9l1001) wireless USB adapter. I went to the Ralink website and downloaded their OS x wireless utility, but the utility won't open. The computer sees the device in the System Profile list, but I am not able to use it as a wireless device. Or at least don't know how. Any ideas? Dellmantt
For an AppleBCM5751 kext that works on 10.6 (may be different to the one you are using)and a way to set the mac address (blue edit) http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...=233396&hl= Had not heard of the lockup before. You probably have already searched, if not try this search http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&...0l0l251l251l2-1 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/258259-dell-xps-gen-4-almost-there/#findComment-1691336 Share on other sites
mrderp
Quick update. Tried editing the rc.local file and it wasnt there. I tried creating it with the ifconfig command and the computer froze on boot up. Would updating the system/using a different kernel help? I keep reading about Legacy kernel but I'm reluctant to use it because the ones included with the iATKOS cd work just fine. Dellmantt
I don't thing updating at this stage will fix the problem. Are you using the right MAC Address or have you tried another address. You could try deleting the AppleBCM5751 kext and the network interfaces from System Preferences. Rebuild kernel caches & permissions (Kext Wizard). Install the kext from my guide and add the network back. All I can think of, sorry, maybe someone else can help. Your system has a P4, am I correct, if so you will be running a patched (Legacy) kernel. When updating just install a updated Legacy Kernel to match your system version. mrderp
Good news! Got it to work. I completely reinstalled my OS using a retail DVD with the instructions from your link I then updated the OS to 10.6.6. After the update the MAC address command STILL made the computer freeze, AND the fact that if I tried to make a rc.local file my computer froze I went to plan B. After hours of research trying to find out what chipset my cheap USB wireless unit used, I came up empty. So in desperation I took it apart and looked at the chip If anyone else runs into this problem, the chip that a Belkin N150 (F9L1001) uses is a Realtek 8188SU chip. I found the kext on Kexts.com and it works amazing. So all in all the good ol' XPS works fine with the OS. Now if I could only get it to properly shut down it'd be perfect.
