I was looking at this post, and saw the guy mount his motherboard on a peice of cardboard lol.

Surely this is an extreme fire hazard?

Can someone tell me an alternative to attatching the motherboard to the case? or is the cardboard one safe?

I can see how cardboard will insulate heat inside the case, although I don't think it would be likely that it will cause a fire.

I mean they have crazy things like this:

But to make the best temperature efficient scenario I'd use an aluminum panel. You can buy one of those popular Lian Li mobo trays, or make your own with a piece of aluminum sheet.

Is it this?

That just transfers the problem onto the motherboard tray doesnt it? How would I attatch the motherboard try into the casing?

P.S. Buying a G5 case tomorrow for £20 lols. :)

That's probably it, I'm not sure exactly... eelhead knows. Maybe he can confirm.

But most people drill holes into the tray and screw it onto the existing G5 stand offs. Then mount the mobo onto the tray (which has its own atx holes/stand offs)

Another way is to ditch the tray all together and break off the G5 stand offs to be repositioned for atx and glued/epoxied onto the case. I am thinking of going this route as I want to reposition my mobo to the back of the case.

The cardboard in the first post link isn't so much as cardboard but a heavier type plastic and withstands heat good and well as insulates. I almost followed that build when I was first lurking about.

The way you can do it is just do the motherboard tray and no cut mount with the jumpers like zammy is making or the cut method like I did. If you clicky my links you will see how its done the cut way.

The mobo tray I used was a Mountain Mod tray with the two 80mm fan openings. The Linlian one was alway sold out every time I had looked so I went with a MM one. The MM one has 4 mounting holes at the inner side of the mobo tray, two at top and two at bottom. I used the G5's standoffs with some JB weld to affix the front edge of the mobo tray. The back of it of course would screw to the rear of the G5. It works out great because you make you cut smaller then the holes on the back side of the mobo tray and use the many perforated holes in the G5 as your screw holes :)

Works out great!

  • 2 weeks later...

If you're resting the motherboard on it even for bench testing, cardboard is perfect. It does not have a fire hazard, and it will not cause any problems at all. If you were to use any metal or any plastic, you run the risk of either short circuits or melting the plastic, both of which can cause major issues.

Cases have motherboard standoffs for a reason.

Also, wood is another great material to use for resting electronics on, and carries no fire hazard unless you're working near open flame, or flammable materials with a risk of ignition.
