Just a mad thought. I have a wee IR receiver thing which came with an ancient TV card (for PC). It has a tiny IR sensor at one end and a DB9 serial port connector at the other. Various Windows software allowed me to interpret the inputs from the bundled remote as keypresses, and thus enabled remote control of various things.

I'm currently building a hackintosh HTPC and i'd like to try to get this to work under OSX, either with the remote which came with the receiver or possibly the Apple Remote which came with my MacBook.

I strongly suspect that all that is required is some way to read data coming in from the serial port, but i'm stumped as to how to even begin.

Anyone know much about RS232 comms, IR receivers and OS X?

A tall order, I know....

Cheers
