brettiegabber
Hi everyone, I've worked hard to get a gateway m-6843 laptop running OSX. It works pretty well. I've got the sound, keyboard, and trackpad working. It is stable. I could not fix the keyboard brightness adjustment function keys, but a software add-on gives me a nice fix. I am running a retail version of Snow Leopard with a combo upgrade to 10.6.6. The laptop is a core 2 duo with x3100 integrated graphics. The wireless only half works (no encryption, unstable) but I'm planning a cheap part swap to fix that. The bane of my hackintosh experience, however, is SLEEP. I cannot get this damn thing to sleep. I've tried every kext I can find, every trick, every hint. I have scoured this message board. Nothing seems to work. Here is the behavior: In BIOS, I've turned off legacy usb support, wake on lan, and wake on lid. When the computer is in this state it shuts down and restarts normally, depending on what the user chooses. HOWEVER, if I put it to sleep it goes dark, the power light goes off for just a second, and then it roars back to life. But it isn't really working - I can click on windows that were already open, move them around, and scroll even but no new programs can be opened and I cannot access any menu items without complete freezing. Pinwheel of death. I must always hold down the power key to reset after a sleep. After a reset from a failed sleep attempt, the BIOS has modified itself. The three options I turned off are now on. It will start up normally, but if I try to shut down from the OS later it will not shut down but restart... This makes sense because the BIOS options are "waking" it back up. Thus, I have to reset the BIOS options each time after an attempted sleep to regain normal shutdown behavior. I am computer literate but not a programmer. I cannot understand how the BIOS gets reset, and it seems to me that if this happens when I press sleep it explains why it does not sleep - those options need to be OFF for sleep to work, in theory. Does anyone agree or disagree? Can anyone explain how the BIOS is modified by an attempted sleep cycle? Is there a way to stop that from happening and test whether "steady" BIOS settings would enable sleep? I would prefer to get sleep working but, in the alternative, it would at least be nice if a sleep did not freeze the computer and require a total reset. If I can fix this I believe it will be fully functional. Help is appreciated! I'm at a loss. Thank you. CleverCoder
I have a similar problem. I have a Gateway m6755 that works perfectly with the exception of: Integrated WiFi, webcam, CD-Burner, and sleep functionality. The biggest productivity killer is not being able to put the machine into sleep. I haven't verified the BIOS behavior of the OP, but I suspect it might be similar. The hassle is that I either have to just kill it with a 5-second power off, or when I shut down, the machine starts back up automatically. When I attempt to put the machine to sleep, it hangs with a black screen requiring me to power it off manually, again. Anyone with any ideas? I'm going to explore the BIOS settings, but I remember them being very, VERY thin.
