Natively, and with the phenix patched dvd, im expecting a login, but it gets bypassed and goes straight to the OS. Ok, about your first issue, with the laptop freezing when you close the lid, this is most likely due to the Energy Saver controls. The easiest (but probably not best) solution is to simply turn off the Energy Saver options for putting the display to sleep. This is done by going to System Prefrences > Energy Saver > Pushing the slider bar for the sleep time over to "Never". This should be done both for the settings for Power Adapter, and for Battery. Try just the display first (to see if its just the display sleep crashing) and if that doesnt work, do it for the computer sleep as well. Computer Sleep is currently not working under most (all?) systems, so you wont be loosing anything there. Ive also read that you can just copy over the AppleACPIDisplay.kext file from the Darwin for Intel CD, and that will make display sleep work properly, but I havnt tried that yet (I'll post back this weekend when I go home and try it). As far as the Login Screen not being displayed, go to System Preferences > Accounts > Login Options. If it is grey'ed out click the Unlock button at the bottom. Then, you can Un-Check the "Automatically log in as" button to prevent the system from automatically logging you in. Let me know if this doesnt work. Not a problem.... I experianced the freezing on my laptop at home as well (also a dell, but a latitude) I'll fight with the ACPI settings some more (try booting with Platform=ACPI|X86PC and Platform=X86PC) when I go home this weekend...
