Hello Mac lovers !

I have been building a new case and thought you guys/gals might like it.

I have been documenting the build here : ITXGamer Build

I'll post some Mac-centric renders here.

While the current iteration is solid, I will add ventilation holes, as needed.

The Macish renders will be very Faraday. With the ITX form factor and the

inherent low-power of Sandy Bridge, I wanted to see how a tight enclosure

would fare.

One thing to keep in mind... This is still considered a project. Rear IO ports

will be cut next week and the power button is still in the air.

Thoughts and suggestions are most welcome !

Specs so far:

  • Mobo: Gigabyte GA-H67N-USB3-B3
    CPU: 2500k
    Memory: G.Skill [1333] 8GB
HDD: 2 SSD's for booting and main apps
    CPU Cooler: Thermalright AXP-140
GPU: Single slot, low power; still searching [less than 7" length]
PSU: SeaSonic SS-350SFE [350W] SFX form factor
Optical Drive: Panasonic UJ-867A [Got it this week, runs great.]

Case: Custom 8"^3 [6061-T6 Sheet & Plate] [solidworks renders to follow]

Some of the components were roughly modeled based on their dimensions and appearance, others were modified from existing CAD from "Grabcad" http://grabcad.com/

I am trying to keep this thing near passive. The 60mm PSU fan and top venting may be enough to do this.

This case could easily be made with wood. I can imagine a very nice wood cube. It would

be cheap and very pretty. I have CAD and a PDF :P

CNC for the top and bottom sections. Standard forming for the case housing and welding.

Extrusion was my first choice, for larger consumption, but extruders like to stay in the 6" squared envelope.

There are extruders that can go up to 8 or 9 inches but I didn't want to explore that further

until I got some feedback. I like my own design and see room for improvement but that

doesn't mean everyone will like it.

So, cheaper prototype forming is the best deal here. Worst case scenario, I have a really nice,

one of a kind case.

I hope the case gets met with some enthusiasm because I abhor all the "cookie cutter" steel cases

on the market. Most, not all, are just mass produced stamped steel and molded plastic.

Even my more expensive Zalman HTPC case is lacking real style. It is blocky and too industrial.

I might fire back up the mATX case modelling if this case gets some smiles.

:(

  • 5 weeks later...

NICE! this is actually the kind of thing i have been looking for.

im trying to set up my own small pc business i wonder how hard it would be to design a laptop in this way?

i want to be the worlds first laptop tuning company doing extreame mods, recycling laptops modernising them and working closely with asus

its a bit of a dream at the moment but i have been looking for people who know about kad.

im just a concept artist and cant ever produce what i draw, that is frustrating sometimes.
