Ok...basically as part of my case mod on the mac pro, I need to trim the height of the standoffs.

Since the screw threads on the existing standoffs are too shallow, they only go in around 8mm (half the height of standoffs), if I continue to trim the standoff, there wouldnt be enough screw thread left.

I realized I have 2 options, use a 3.6mm drill bit to remove any existing threads then use a M4 tap to make new screw threads (4mm diameter)

OR use a m3.5x0.6 tap to extend the screw thread depth all the way to the base of the standoff, thus giving me enough screw thread to continue my case mod.

basically both options are ok with me. which option should i go for?

thanks all

I just went and bought new threaded standoffs and screws from ACE hardware. I didn't want to cut the ones from the G5 down so I went that route. the ones that were in the G5 were just over 10.5mm and the shorted ones were 10.2mm or something like that, I can't remember. I bought ones that where just under 10mm so now my Graphics card mounts nicely onto the rear of the case.

I'll probably go this route, I'm thinking of relocating my mobo flush to the rear too. But i'll have to cut my I/O circuit board even smaller so it'll fit next to the mobo.

What kind of adhesive did you use?

I used JB weld. It works really well and ater I cleaned the area and made it a little rough at the glue point they are pretty sturdy.

I was going to possibly go with the motherboard tray slide in route but I didn't want to spend more money lol

I already put down lots for this project.
