MAC_7_Ghost
I just wanted to start off with how much I love this forum. I have an eMachines EM250 loaded with iDeneb OS X 10.5.6 (thanks to this forum). I was wondering what is the best method to update it to 10.5.8 with out killing netbook. I've looked around and could not find anything I felt comfortable upgrading with. Thanks for all your help! 477h
I'm using a HP Compaq 615 and had the same version (10.5.6) installed, and updatet successfully to 10.5.8. When updating, you have to know the following: - some drivers (.kext files) might be overwritten, but usually you will still be able to boot the system after the update you will have to find the right drivers again, depending on how many .kexts you needed at first installation, this can be a long and bugfull process - in my case (and I think this will also happen to you ) the kernel was overwritten, so the system was unable to start up. Never the less, not a great problem with Chameleon bootloader: copy a working kernel to your OS X drive and name it something like "mach_kernel.backup" or whatever. then update your system. Then, at startup, when you are in the bootloader, type the name of the kernel ("mach_kernel.backup") to boot up with your working kernel. Later you can make it auto-load on startup, but thats another story. Have to say, I had great problems with drivers after update, so if your not a pro, this is in my opinion the easiest way to do it: - Install a fresh, clean copy of OS X - Do NOT install any drivers/fixes/etc you do not necessarily need to boot the system (also, of course, Ethernet/Wireless drivers if needed) - Boot OS X, install ALL updates you find. Remember, if you checked everthing found by OS X and installed it, that doesn't mean you have all updates. Restart and check again till it doesnt find anything new and says that your OS X has the most recent software. - Boot up your install DVD, select your OS X drive. Then you can select what extras etc. will be installed. UNCHECK "Basic System" (might be named different in your case), otherwise everything will be overwritten again and you end up just where you started. Then, select every driver/fix/etc you need and hit install. - Boot OS X and install the drivers that are not integrated on install DVD (if there are such) Most drivers working with 10.5.6 will also work with 10.5.8, so after this you should have a running, more or less clean OS X. Never the less, it might be that some drivers are not working, in this case you have to fix them manually. If my english is not understandable, send me a PM and I'll try to help you over ICQ or whatever.
