Yeah, the topic description probably says it all. My final goal here is to have a triple-boot system with XP Home, Vista Beta 2, and OSX86 10.4.6.

System specs:

Dell Dimension XPS Gen4

Processor: P4 EE 3.73 GHz

Motherboard: Dell motherboard with Intel i925X chipset

Memory: 4 GB dual-channel DDR2

Hard Disks: (2) 74GB Western Digital SATA HDDs in a RAID 0 array <--- (this is where the problem is ATM)

Graphics: ATI Radeon X850 XT Platinum

Sound: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS PCI card

So, I have XP and Vista dual-booting peacefully. I have already added a Mac OS entry to the Vista bootloader and linked it to the Chain0 file on C. I created the type AF primary partition in unallocated space on the HDDs.

I've had a couple problems so far installing OSX86. I'm using the MacOSX_10.4.6DVDPATCHED_Myz build of OSX. First error I got was the infamos "still waiting for root device", but I fixed that by moving my DVD drive from primary slave to primary master.

Now the installer starts fine. The problem now is this: The Disk Utility can't see my hard disk(s).

My question is: Does Mac OS X86 support SATA and/or RAID? If yes, does it support an Intel 82801FB SATA RAID controller?

Is the only way to install OSX on this computer to put it on a PATA drive? I have one laying around that I could use if necessary.

Mac OS X does support SATA as long as you have a supported southbridge chipset. As for RAID, I have not yet seen a single OSX86 box using it yet, so I am not certain.

Installing it onto a PATA drive is not a bad idea. You will lose a little bit of performance, but its almost negligible.

Other than that, everything should work fine. As a side thought though, SATA will not work if the drives are in a RAID array. You will probably have to disable RAID in the bios (assuming that its mobo controlled.)

Yeah, I don't really feel like disabling my RAID. Sole reason: XP and Vista are already installed over it, and I don't want to redo those installations.

Interesting thing about my Dell's motherboard is that it only has one IDE channel. This is probably because the HDDs are all on SATA. Currently, that channel is taken up by a DVD burner and a CD burner, but I can sacrifice the CD burner for this.

So, if I put a PATA HDD in, should it be primary master or primary slave? I can see reasons for both: The DVD needs master to boot the OS X install DVD, but the HDD might need master to boot from.

You've kinda got me in an interesting situation here. I want to say for you to test the HD as P. slave and the DVD burner as P. master and see how that goes. The reason I suggested disabling the onboard RAID was because it might corrupt the install or not let it run at all. I cannot think of anyway around this and am not sure if disabling it will corrupt your data, so I would try the install with it on.

Good luck.

Alright then. I'll toss in my old 160GB PATA HDD on p.slave and try it out. Thanks for the input bikedude.

And would the Chain0 bootloader reference still work with OSX on a different HDD? Or would I need to do something different?

Meh, so much for that. Apparently my dad won't let me open the computer (it's not mine). Says he doesn't trust me... <_<:D:rolleyes:

Are we entirely sure there's absolutely NO WAY to get OSx86 working on a SATA RAID array? I'm not particularly hopeful about this, since System Profiler doesn't even recognize my SATA controller.

Guess I'll just have to stick with the XP/Vista dualboot or find another computer with a PATA HDD to do this on.

Unless...

Can OSx86 be successfully dual-booted (with Chain0) from a USB external HDD? I could buy a USB enclosure for a PATA drive and maybe install it on there.

There´s no way to install OSX86 on your sata RAID.

But you can install another HD in the PC, install OSX86 without bootloader and your dad will never see it until he opens the PC. You can explain him that your are booting OSX86 from CD if he is asking :D

Except:

There's only one IDE channel in the PC because of the SATA. Dell designed the system weird like that. So I would have to disable one of the optical drives to install another HDD.

Which leads to the question at the end of my last post: Can OSX be installed and booted off a USB external HDD?
