I use my "hackintosh" for quite some time now...

it's basically the same stuff apple uses for the lowend machines...

and intel chipset board (950 GMA), 775 Socket,...

I use the onboard graphics adapter... and it works well, if sometimes a bit slow...

the CPU is still "single core" stuff...

as the system basically works smooth, besides some graphic-slow problems but I'd really like to have more speed (especially considering that I use a few apps which need rosetta to run)

I really would like to upgrade my system a little...

first: Dual Core cpu ...

-> Intel Pentium D 940, Dual Core, 3.2 GHz, 2x 2MB

should be good and work without probolems, shouldn't it?

second: Graphics Adapter...

and here's where I need some help.

I really don't want any mouse-tearing (had it ...)... OpenGL, CoreImaging and QuartzExtreme should be FULLY supported...

What does REALLY work well?

(I'm not into gaming, ... I don't need ultimate performance, but it should do quite better than the onboard thing... then I'm happy).

the new macpro offers support for the following PCI-Express cards:

* NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT mit 256 MB GDDR2 SDRAM, ein Single-Link-DVI-Anschluss und ein Dual-Link-DVI-Anschluss

* ATI Radeon X1900 XT mit 512 MB GDDR3 SDRAM, zwei Dual-Link-DVI-Anschlüsse

* NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 mit 512 MB GDDR3 SDRAM, zwei Dual-Link-DVI-Anschlüsse und ein 3D-Stereoanschluss

So I figure that any of the above should work flawlessly??

are there "cheap" alternatives? (less power...)

thanks for the help

other than GMA950, the only card to work 'flawlessly' is the ATI X1600. have a look at the borisbadenov tutorial thread (in the genius bar) and the original borisbadenov thread (in drivers) for details. users there have reported a 'perfect' working card.

on the CPU front, I myself use a Pentium D 920 (2.8Ghz version of the one you're suggesting) and yes, it does work well. however, newer osx86 kernels (including the recently opensourced 10.4.7 kernel) dropped support for non Core-architecture intel cpus power management and timers, so a Core 2 Duo might be a more appropriate (read: long-term compatible) choice. even at lower clockspeed, they should comare favourably to the Pent. D.
