Gollum999
I've been trying to install OSX on my laptop, but I've run into a few problems. I'm pretty new to this whole Hackintosh thing, so I figured rather than wasting all my time trying to figure it out by myself, I'd come and ask the experts. So, I've having two main problems right now: 1) OSX installs, but I get the "gray screen of death" when I boot, and 2) the bootloader can't seem to find Ubuntu. #1: My first (and main) problem is that I get the gray screen of death every time I try to boot into OSX. I have a feeling that this has something to do with my install options. I'm pretty sure that all of my hardware is compatible, but just in case: Dell Inspiron 1420 Intel Mobile PM965/82801H Intel Core 2 Duo 2.00 GHz NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS iATKOS S3 v2 And here are the results from running lspci -nn on Ubuntu: 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 Memory Controller Hub [8086:2a00] (rev 0c) 00:01.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 PCI Express Root Port [8086:2a01] (rev 0c) 00:1a.0 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 [8086:2834] (rev 02) 00:1a.1 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #5 [8086:2835] (rev 02) 00:1a.7 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #2 [8086:283a] (rev 02) 00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller [8086:284b] (rev 02) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) PCI Express Port 1 [8086:283f] (rev 02) 00:1c.1 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) PCI Express Port 2 [8086:2841] (rev 02) 00:1c.3 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) PCI Express Port 4 [8086:2845] (rev 02) 00:1c.5 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) PCI Express Port 6 [8086:2849] (rev 02) 00:1d.0 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 [8086:2830] (rev 02) 00:1d.1 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #2 [8086:2831] (rev 02) 00:1d.2 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #3 [8086:2832] (rev 02) 00:1d.7 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #1 [8086:2836] (rev 02) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge [8086:2448] (rev f2) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge [0601]: Intel Corporation 82801HEM (ICH8M) LPC Interface Controller [8086:2815] (rev 02) 00:1f.1 IDE interface [0101]: Intel Corporation 82801HBM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) IDE Controller [8086:2850] (rev 02) 00:1f.2 IDE interface [0101]: Intel Corporation 82801HBM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) SATA IDE Controller [8086:2828] (rev 02) 00:1f.3 SMBus [0c05]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) SMBus Controller [8086:283e] (rev 02) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8400M GS] [10de:0427] (rev a1) 03:01.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394) [0c00]: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C832 IEEE 1394 Controller [1180:0832] (rev 05) 03:01.1 SD Host controller [0805]: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host Adapter [1180:0822] (rev 22) 03:01.2 System peripheral [0880]: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C592 Memory Stick Bus Host Adapter [1180:0592] (rev 12) 03:01.3 System peripheral [0880]: Ricoh Co Ltd xD-Picture Card Controller [1180:0852] (rev 12) 09:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5906M Fast Ethernet PCI Express [14e4:1713] (rev 02) 0c:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315] (rev 01) Here are the options I chose when I installed OSX: Main Hardware: SATA/IDE: Intel SATA/IDE Sound: (both of these were selected by default, so I left them) Voodoo HDA Apple HDA 10.6.2 CPU Power Management: Voodoo P-State Laptop Hardware: Battery Card Reader TSC Sync ACPI Thermal (32-bit) VGA: nVidia: EFI string: (I wasn't really sure of the difference between the different options here) VGA/DVI Enablers: (Wasn't sure about this either) NVEnabler Network: Wireless: Broadcom Everything else I left default. So, am I doing something wrong? Like I said above, I'm pretty new to this. #2: This one's not as big of a deal, I can probably get it figured out eventually, but might as well ask while I'm here... Right now my laptop in set up to dual boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. I have been using GRUB for my bootloader, but I really liked the way the OSX bootloader looked, so I figured I'd try it out. Unfortunately, now Ubuntu isn't showing up in my list of operating systems. Here is what my current partition setup looks like: Does this have anything to do with the fact that Ubuntu is on a logical partition? And, once I can figure out how to get OSX to boot, is there a way to fix it without re-partitioning my drive? Thanks for the help. Mac Boy
1. If it installs, then there's a good chance it will work. Use -v at the chameleon prompt to see exactly where the problem is. It's probably a kernel panic, because it seems you didn't select a modified kernel. 2. You have to install GRUB in the Linux partition PBR (not in the MBR) for chameleon to be able to see it. You might have problem with the logical partitions though. I'm not too sure about that because I don't use them. So you don't have to re-partition the drive. Reinstall and select a kernel, and only one nvidia driver -- use NVEnabler for now. Gollum999
Ahh, {censored}, I totally forgot I posted this thread! O_O Haha, school got pretty busy right after I posted here, and I had to give up on it for a while. Luckily I'm done with school now, so hopefully I can actually get this fixed. You are right, I did forget a modified kernel. Unfortunately, it still crashes when I try to boot into OSX. I've tried all of the modified kernels, and they all seem to give me the same errors: And thanks for the help with the Linux issue, I'll worry about that once I can actually boot. Mac Boy
I've never seen the OSArray error, but you can try to deselect any RTC option and see if it helps. Gollum999
Ooh, thanks for the idea... but rather than deselecting all of the RTC options, I tried switching from the default option to the 32-bit option, and that seemed to work. Now it boots, but it just goes to a black screen. Making progress though. Gollum999
Aha! Sorry for the double post, but I got it working. I had to select the other graphics enabler (Natit, I think) to get around the black screen. Of course, now that everything is running, there are a few problems I still have to fix: 1. No sound from the internal speakers. Works fine with headphones. I'm using VoodooHDA, since it's the only one I've tried that recognizes any sound devices. Haven't tried using the internal microphone yet. 2. Closing the laptop doesn't do anything. (Not a big deal.) 3. Shutdown and Restart are both broken. Everything will shut down properly, but power will stay on (and the computer will not restart) until manually turned off. I have EvOReboot.kext installed.
