I had my ati 5870 working for a long time.

I was running it with the aty_init method.

I was using windows for the last couple of months but I was switching back and forth between the two on certain occasions.

First time I switched to OSX a while back I noticed that the screen turns off and then tries to come up again but with some noise in the display until it stabilize..

last time I booted to OSX, now gives a black screen..

I tried the old ATI experimental ##### CD that was laying around and still gives the same issue..

what could be the problem?

I don't have a backup osx drive to boot up and seek whats going on, I am only stuck with single user mode now.

This may not help but try deleting the contents of System\Library\Caches and rebooting. Failing that try getting rid of aty_init and using Kabyls bootloader.

I tried the latest #####: same issue, black screen

I tried the new kabyl ati chameleon with my own rom file, same issue, black screen.

the VGA is working fine on windows 7, dunno why it started doing this on OSX, weird!

any suggestions ?

I will try to clear the caches directory and report back though. thanks for the suggestion.

edit: ok, tried clearing the caches directory... the same problem still occur!...

this is driving me crazy!

For clarification, what I meant by black screen, is just monitor going into power saving mode..

systems seems to be running ok, as I use keyboard shortcut to force restart the system ok.

Which version are you running? 10.6.6? If you are still on 10.6.4 try reinstalling the graphics update.

I am on 10.6.4

as the monitor goes to sleep after loging in, I really have no options except Single User Mode..

so if you or anyone have the time to extract the kexts from the graphics update with pacifist and uploads them for me to test out this option and try replacing the kexts, I would be very thankful..

also, does anybody knows how to use applejack without installing it by the installer?

I want to use it from the Single User Mode.

thanks

Can you not get the graphics update (or 10.6.5 or 10.6.6 combo update) from the apple site, download them to a usb drive or different partition, boot in single user mode and install them?

I have the similar issue:

I have installed the "Chameleon 2.0 RC5 r700 by Kabyl" inside the ##### 3.2 and on boot I see the first black screen (no signal) just before the login (when the driver starting and the vga fan go slowly)

Then simply put to sleep my system thru the power button and after the next wake-up, the monitor (Dell U2711 via DVI) work greit.

I can put to sleep and the monitor still work fine.

My Cinebench score are about 35 and either resolution and QE are good.

What I can resolve the first black screen on startup?

Many regards

how to install combo updates from single user mode?

Oops yes sorry - can you boot using a boot disk such as ##### 2.5.1 and then installing the graphics update or combo update from Apple?

##### should work and get you to the desktop - I use it for recovery and emergency booting of my 6870 and 5870 based pc's

Hello, try this comand in -s single user mode, this remove all graphics kext for your / "raiz disk"

install applejack, install combo update, not reboot, open multibest and repairpermissions and rebuild caches.

Now reboot the system

mout -uw /

mkdir /ExtOff/

cd /

mv /System/library/Extensions/GeF* /ExtOff

mv /System/Library/Extensions/NV*kext /ExtOff

mv /System/Library/Extensions/ATI*kext /ExtOff

rm -r /System/Library/Extensions/Extensions.mkext

cd /

shutdown -r now

even ##### makes the same black screen problem..

I thought you meant that there is a way of installing combo update from Single User Mode.

I will try and see if it will make the monitor work this way,

thanks for the suggestion.
