Kevin_Flynn
I've used a few various images like iPC 10.5.6 and Kalyway 10.5.2, but none of them get past the apple screen. When I'm in verbose mode, it says still waiting for root device. I've searched InsanelyMac and Google, and they all say to set the SATA devices to AHCI, but I cant find that option anywhere in the menus or sub-menus. Also, how would a retail disc of Snow Leopard using ##### run compared to a cracked image? I'd prefer retail so I can update straight from apple. Dellmantt
The old "Still Waiting for Root" Seeing it is happening at the install DVD stage, this search will help http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&...mp;aql=&oq= , if all else fails, try a usb dvd drive or cloning a retail install DVD to a usb drive. Retail install is the best. Member Verdant has guides for NForce boards. Should be able to find them with this search http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&...mp;aql=&oq= Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/247397-hardware-problems-p/#findComment-1637866 Share on other sites
Kevin_Flynn
Thanks for the info, it looks promising. I'll try it and report back when I get home. Tycho91
I found the AHCI option at "Storage options". Maybe you can find that in your BIOS? Nope, I can't get it to work with the SATA DVD drive. I'm understanding that this may also be happening because the drivers are either not loading during the initial DVD boot, or are non-existent. (Still have that 'root device' error) I tried an IDE DVD drive with no luck, but haven't been able to try an IDE hard drive, but I don't know if that would make much of a difference. Besides, I'd prefer the faster speeds of a SATA hard drive. Also, because I'm short on money right now, I can't buy a USB DVD drive. AND (as I understand) to clone the install DVD to a USB flash drive, you need to have a working install of OSX to begin with to use Disk Utility, of which I don't have a working Hackintosh, nor do I have a Mac to borrow. Retail install is the best. Member Verdant has guides for NForce boards. Should be able to find them with this search http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&...mp;aql=&oq= I found his PDF detailing the settings for the nForce series 6 and 7 boards and set mine (650i Ultra, not SLI board) to the recommended settings. However, I cannot (for my life) find where to set SATA to AHCI. That's the main thing that's screwing me over. If we can't figure this out, do you think you might be able to help point me in the right direction for a new mainboard that would work with a retail install of snow? That is, if there's absolutely no hope for this one. :pirate2: Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/247397-hardware-problems-p/#findComment-1638367 Share on other sites

Change ports for the DVD etc? Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/247397-hardware-problems-p/#findComment-1638377 Share on other sites
Kevin_Flynn
I thought I did point you in the right direction for the MB you have now. Did you read the links from the search? Change ports for the DVD etc? Yeah, I've done that. I've disconnected ALL other SATA devices, and tried putting the HD in A0, and the DVD drive in A1 with no luck. I swapped them around and put the DVD drive in A0 and the HD in A1, and I kept getting the error. When I was using the IDE DVD drive, I had it set as master, and had the HD plugged in A0, and I think even A1 at one point in time, but it still didn't work. (For future reference: The SATA ports are recognized by the BIOS, and are physically labeled as A0, A1, B0, B1, being ports 1-4 respectively) Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/247397-hardware-problems-p/#findComment-1638552 Share on other sites
Kevin_Flynn
I found this: http://www.evga.com/forumsarchive/tm.asp?m=268477, so now I know my mainboard does not support AHCI. Does this mean OSX on my system is now a lost cause, or do I just need a modified distro with drivers? I'm confused as to what I should do, because some of the results from those searches you posted say that I can get a distro with drivers, or modify a distro to have the drivers, but most of them didn't have anything to do with my chipset. And other search results said that all their problems were solved by the AHCI option, of which I don't have. So yes you can install OS X on non AHCI compliant boards and the Guide has a link to a boot cd to do so.. Quote from the guide "NOTA BENE 1. Everyone without a fully AHCI-compliant nForce MCP MOBO, first read the INTRODUCTION and BREAKING NEWS sections and then read and follow PART A and PART B. " Don't think I can help you further as I don't own a system with that chipset, may be somebody else. dothacker
you're using 4gb RAM. remove 2gb or flag it on boot maxmem=2048 if you have nforce chipset. I actually have read the quoted thread before, but I'll take a closer look at it this time, because it appears to be my last option. EDIT: Now I remember why I originally didn't pay much attention to this thread. Despite the sections being labeled and instructions on which order to read them in, the sections themselves confuse me to the point of punching babies in the face. (Not really, lol, but I'm frustrated) you're using 4gb RAM. remove 2gb or flag it on boot maxmem=2048 if you have nforce chipset. I already removed 2 of the 4 sticks because of the different brands. I thought maybe the different timings between the pairs would have adverse effects later down the road. Kevin_Flynn
did you install applenforce.ata? how about booting arch=i386? I downloaded iAtkos S3 v2 (Which is snow leopard), and it comes with the AppleNForceATA kext. However, upon booting, it now gives me a 'sam multimedia' error, and then the 'root device' error. EDIT: The SAM error may be due to this old laptop's DVD drive. The Kalyway and iPC DVD's were written with my desktop, the one I'm trying to install OSX on. So if I put windows on just long enough to burn a DVD with the 'good' drive, this may work. EDIT EDIT: Nope. A re-burn didn't work. Kevin_Flynn
I'm done with this. Towards the end of the month when the sandy bridge chipsets are re-released, I'm going to build a new system. Then I'm going to sell this one for a mac mini. Yes I could build a system to mimic a mini, but I'd prefer to have a real mac so I don't have problems like I'm having with this computer.
