It seems like almost every guide describes extracting the snow leopard DVD to a USB key and installing it from there.

 

Can I somehow boot my retail snow leopard DVD and install straight from there? It looks like different solutions like "RebelEFI" exist. If these work, which is the best?

The best is the one that works with your hardware. There are several boot CDs available, try them all. Use a CD-RW.

A boot CD works via "swap-trick", you boot with the CD and swap it for the retail installation DVD when prompted.
