CrazyC7
This message is supposed to be in reply to this thread: 10.6.3 nVidia Blank Screen Issue with DVI/HDMI on 9800GT But because I haven't posted on here enough, I can't post anywhere outside of this message board. I have also sent Macandcheese a private message in hopes of getting him over to this thread so that we can discuss our video cards. I have some info about what I have done with my Nvidia drivers to get things working on my system. I have the same video card as you. I was getting some choppy display and occasionally a scrambled video output which would lock me out of my display and unable to do anything except reboot, which led me to some more research and decide to extract my own rom file. So I have the genuine ROM file for the PNY card. PNY 9800GT 1024mb EE Rom: 10de_0614.rom.zip I copied the rom file to the Extras folder and I went into the NVEnabler kext and removed the lines for the 8800gt rom completely because I was unable to figure out the Hex value of the rom file to insert. After completing the above, I have all the same results as you, but I don't get a scrambled screen any more. Only on occasion, the display will pause for a second or two before clearing up. I can deal with this since it seems like it only happens when I have numerous windows open on the screen at the same time. Oh, I forgot to mention, this is running 10.6.5. I also had to install the nvidia 10.6.4 drivers that I downloaded from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?216jwwea9bf5it0 Next, I attempted to update to 10.6.6 and have had nothing but troubles. First, I had to update my SleepEnabler.kext for 10.6.6 from kexts.com. Then I went on to try all the same things I did in 10.6.5 and really got no where. I did actually manage to have my dual display working (both displays enabled, I really only use one) with hdmi output, but I couldn't get it to give me any resolutions other than 1024x768. After fighting with it for hours, I gave up and restored my backup. A piece of advice.... on my machine, I have multiple drives (actually quite a few running raid arrays and such) and have 3 identical system partitions set for 20 gigs each. I use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup my good configurations and keep editing one partition. When it screws up, as I'm sure you know it will eventually, I boot up one of the working partitions and restore the original back again or just make edits to the one I messed up. I would be very interested in hearing some other results from 10.6.6. For now, I can live without the update, but eventually would like to keep my system current. CrazyC7
Well, I gave up on the 9800GT. I did have it working with HDMI out and acceleration a couple of times, but not without the occasional choppy graphics and freezes. Being that I had just gotten this card within the past 2 weeks, I decided to return it, stating that I wasn't able to get it working to it's fullest extent in my computer. Of course, I did not say that it was running OsX. lol I chose to go with an NVidia branded Geforce 460 GTX. No, not even the same level of card or the same price range, but you know what? I was reading TonyMac's site before I chose this card and when I installed it.... I deleted my Extra directory completely, then I used Tony Mac's ##### tool to redo my boot process. It worked perfectly. I upgraded to 10.6.6 first, then ran ##### and installed all the defaults, installed VoodooHDA.kext for my onboard audio and then ran the NVidia retail driver install. Card was working at this point, but needed to add NVenabler to get HDMI without full acceleration. All ports on my card are working with no problems. I'm still at 10.6.4 and everything is working perfectly with my 9800gt. it's not as beefy of a video card as I like so I'll probably upgrade in a bit. i have an ati radeon 3870 x2 sitting in a box because of its incompatibility with osx. CrazyC7
sorry to hear that man, i've been away from the forum for a while. That was my original thinking about the 9800GT, but I couldn't get this system working with my previous card and I didn't really want to spend the extra bucks for the better card. When I saw your info about getting the 9800 to work, I went that route. Unfortunately, I just couldn't get things working the same way you did. I tried all the suggestions and additional options I could find and it just kept screwing up on me. In the long run, I'm probably happier with the overall performance of the 460gtx anyway, so maybe it was a good thing. The new nvidia 4xx line seems to be working good for lots of people, but there are many reports of occasional system freezes and lockups still. I don't get any choppy graphics, just every now and then the system freezes up and requires a reset. The word going around is that no one knows for sure what is causing this, except for maybe a small bug in the drivers. I have never had a freeze up while watching video, so I'm cool with it for now. I'm glad to know this, I too was considering the 460gtx and you're one more person to confirm this card is fully functional for an osx build another thing was I got a deal on this card I just couldn't pass by thanx 4 the input Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/243923-pny-9800gt-1024mb-ee-driver-info/#findComment-1637239 Share on other sites
