Hi people.

Now i used to have a dell Studio XPS 16 which sadly wasn't compatible with OSX, but that died and dell offered me a replacement in the shape of a beastly Alienware m17x. I have been using Apple computers for several years now and i honestly find windows unstable, ugly and unproductive. But i could only afford cheap Apples like the Mac Mini and macbook. And now i have the opportunity to install Mac OSX on a machine that rivals the power of a Mac Pro.

I know a few people have asked about the compatibility between OSX (leopard or SL) and the Alienware m17x. And there is a topic which explains thoroughly how to install it. But the machine Dell have offered is the R2 model which consists of:

-i7-740QM

-1GB GDDR5 Radeon HD 5870

-Dell Wireless 1520 or intel 6300

As far as i know the i7 will work (because the latest iMacs have them?) and the 5870 is in the latest Mac Pro but i can't find anyone who has confirmed it working. And the wireless cards; I am sure i read somewhere that the dell card is not compatible, but is the 6300?

Is there anything i am missing?

Is there any possibility of working?

And i apologize if this topic is in the wrong area.

Thank You

Hey, I'm in the same boat as you. I actually had an R1 (which I wrote a guide for), but due to some power issues, Alienware replaced it for me.

I basically have the same specs. The only difference is that I have a Core i7 920 processor and the 1520 wireless card.

So far, I've been able to install the OS using either Empire EFI or #####. But I haven't had any luck getting the graphics to work.

Let me know if you make any progress, I'll do the same.

Bad News,

I read on the Netkas forums that our GPU is incompatible with OSX. We would have to wait until Apple supports Mobile ATI's. The only other solution I can think of is too get a Nvidia GPU and replace our ATI with it.

BTW, Windows 7 is awesome. I use both OS's everyday, and Windows 7 is much better.
