wdgoldstein
I am a PC type of guy with no Unix or MAC background. I have set up a Hackintosh dual boot system on an Intel 915PBL Motherboard and just about everything works properly except for my Nvidia 6200LE graphics card (I intend to replace this with an ATI 1600 as suggested on the forums). My problem is that with the JAS 10.4.6 > 10.4.7 OSX86 install my initial boot is small (80*50 I think) text. Is there some way to get a graphic boot? Also the DVD player wont initialize but I assume this is related to the Nvidia card. If not any suggestions? Thanks from a guy with no MAC smarts. Rammjet
Edit the following file on your OSX partition: /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist You can use TextEdit in the Applications folder. Modify the file so these lines are included: <key>Quiet Boot</key> <string>Yes</string> Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/24301-text-type-bootno-graphics/#findComment-161502 Share on other sites
wdgoldstein
Thanks for the help but no can do. When I go to edit the file it is read only and I do not know how to change the attributes (sorry for the PC term) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/24301-text-type-bootno-graphics/#findComment-161511 Share on other sites
Rammjet
Then you must not have any networking capability either because the plists for them are also stored in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration Are you sure you looked in Preferences because there is also a PreferencePanes folder? Not sure how you can operate without that folder, your installation is suspect. Finder "Find" command probably won't find it because Apple thought returning system files in searches would be too much information and result in inexperienced people messing where they shouldn't. wdgoldstein
Found the file but read only. How do I change the attribute? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/24301-text-type-bootno-graphics/#findComment-161517 Share on other sites
Rammjet
Easiest way is to drag it to the Desktop where it will make a copy. Edit the copy and drag it back. You should get 2 dialogs: one asking if you want to replace and another asking you to Authenticate. Click that and give your password. Then to be sure permissions aren't screwed, go to the Utilities folder and run Disk Utility. Click on your OSX partition on the left and Repair Permissions on the right. wdgoldstein
OK. I've found how to "overwrite read only files" but now I am told I do not have premission to save files in the folder. Boy this is a lot more complex than it looks! That worked but the system is still booting into text mode till the apple desktop appears :-( Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/24301-text-type-bootno-graphics/#findComment-161522 Share on other sites
Rammjet
When I do it, I get a dialog box that says the file cannot be moved because SystemConfiguration cannot be modified. Then it gives two buttons: Authenticate and OK. If you click on Authenticate, it asks for your password and then will accept the copy. asap18
or just go to terminal type sudo su put in your password type cd then hit enter type nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.boot.plist and hi enter change the Quiet Boot string to Yes Ctrl+o enter ctrl+x Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/24301-text-type-bootno-graphics/#findComment-161538 Share on other sites
Rammjet
That worked but the system is still booting into text mode till the apple desktop appears :-( Look in that file again. Find the entry "Kernel Flags". Is it set to -v ? If so, remove the -v. wdgoldstein
It was the -v that killed me. Took out the kernel flags and -v lines and now boots quicker and in graphics mode. Thanks a bunch!!! Do you believe that the DVD Player problem I mentioned is Graphics Card related? MacMartin
Is there a way to set the resolution of the grey screen? I would like to have it full screen @ 1920x1200 60Hz.
