nekton
There are plenty of bulk Woodcrest Xeon chips in the backstreets of Akihabara. The 3 GHz Woodcrest (bare without cooling fan) costs about 100,000 yen or about $900. Since the new top-of-line MacPro has two of these, Apple has an $1800 value just in the CPUs, or Apple is getting a very good discount from Intel. Today, I saw Conroes (delivered on 5 August) in 1.86, 2 and 2.3 GHz flavors; the 1.86 GHz unit (bare) was 23,000 yen or about $220 and the 2 GHz and 2.3 GHz were about $100 and $200 more, respectively. I guess prices will drop as they become more common. No sign at all of any Merom chips yet.
