Just built a Hackintosh using Dell mini 10v w/ Snow Leopard. Installation went smooth. :) However some apps have windows which extend below the 1024x600 screen resolution and I can't get at the sizing handle at bottom right corner of the app. For example I would like to use the Calibre eBook reader - only about 80% of the reader is visible so I can't resize the window or get at the scroll bar arrows on the right. ;)

My visiting son tried to attach a second display thinking that we might be able to adjust using that - but all we got was white screens on both with a blue bar extreme left edge. so scratch that.

This is my first exposure to Mac and/or OS X, so assume that I know minimal stuff. However I date back to CP/M, DOS, OS/2 and of course all of that MS stuff so a nudge is probably all I need.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Try typing this into a terminal window, it'll make the window smaller by %20.

defaults write -g AppleDisplayScaleFactor 0.8

And then when you want to return it to normal, Type.

defaults write -g AppleDisplayScaleFactor 1

And the 2 white screens may be a product of Mac OS X being confused about mirroring.

It doesn't seem to work with our graphics card.

Connect the second monitor and then run this:

Thank you - Interesting, but not what I need. That scaled the entire display, such that for example, the dock when not hidden is now about an inch up from the bottom of the display - so at 0.8 I had unused space at the bottom of the screen and at the right. The Calibre reader WINDOW is still too tall, and thus still extends beyond the bottom of the view port such that I can't get at the sizing handle. What I think I need is a mechanism to scale an application's window within the AppleDisplay, but not the whole AppleDisplay. For this particular machine, the 1024x600 resolution is perfect - the dock, when visible is positioned exactly at the bottom and fits the width of the screen.

I am going to guess that the Calibre reader window is set for a height of 768 so I'm only seeing the top 600 of the 768.

Any other suggestions? Meanwhile I'll try the Calibre-ebook.com site and see if there is a way to post question. Thanks.
