ajclarkson
I'm hoping to clear up how to do a retail install on the GA-EG41MF-US2H and also answer a few questions which have been floating around about the TP Link TL-WN851N Wireless card. Hardware List: MB: GA-EG41MF-US2H Intel Core 2 Quad q8400 4GB Corsair 800MHz RAM Nvidia 8600GTS TP Link TL-WN851N 640GB WD Caviar HDD Terratec Producer Phase 24FW Soundcard Base Install: Boot the SL retail install CD with the boot disc of your choice (I used nawcom) and install as normal. When you reboot you'll have to use the boot disc again. Bootloader: I then used the excellent ##### tool from tonymacx86 (http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2010/04/ibo...ac-os-x-on.html). I used the easy beast option, which drops in fakesmc.kext and a few other necessary fixes, as well as install chameleon for you. You should now be able to boot from the hard drive fine. WiFi: If you are running on a 32bit processor, then a lot of threads hanging around this board say that this wireless card should just work. On 64bit you will need the AtherosFix.kext (attached). In order to use this you will need to find the device ID of your PCI card. The easiest way to do this is to use the 'View PCI/Vendor ID' option in osx86tools. Look for your wireless card: 04:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. Unknown device [168c:0029] (rev 01) This shows the ID as 168c,29. If yours is the same, then just install the attached kext. Otherwise you need to edit the kext. To do this: Right Click > Show Package Contents > Contents > Info.plist Locate the current ID: <key>IONameMatch</key> <string>pci168c,XX</string> and change the XX to your device ID. Install the kext, reboot and you should be good to go with wireless. AtherosFix.kext.zip Graphics: EFIStudio is a great way to generate EFI Strings for graphics cards, but unfortunately my 8600GTS wasn't an option, and the 8600GT didn't work. Aquamac has a great walkthrough of how to generate the EFI string for a generic 256mb card which worked for me, and a whole host of other cards which might help you out. You can find the guide here: http://aquamac.proboards.com/index.cgi?act...&thread=509 On a reboot you should now have a working graphics card. Conclusion: You should now be safe to upgrade to 10.6.4 and enjoy the speed and interface benefits of snow leopard. If you want onboard sound to work I believe you need VoodooHDA kext for this board. I use a firewire sound card which is supported natively, so my onboard is disabled in bios. Once you have 10.6.4 you can add the correct version of sleep enabler: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=196466 And you should have a fully usable snow leopard install! I'm currently working on the upgrade to 10.6.5 for this board. Everything works except the wireless card, so if you are using ethernet you should be OK to install, as always backup just incase! Hope that helps some people! Adam
