Jbbrack03
Before anyone yells at me, I did read every post in the long thread about the update. I had 10.6.4 installed on my system. I used the updater built into OS X. It did it's thing and then the computer rebooted. Everything appears to be fine, but I can't use my USB mouse. So I rebooted and plugged in an old PS2 mouse. Still can't use it. So I started searching for solutions. I found this: "iam not perfect on terminal put follow that first put two kexts and pfix file on root of usb flash key name it like USB and assume that your mac partion is mac you are now on terminal type first mount -uw / rm -rf /volumes/mac/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext rm -rf /volumes/mac/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext cp -rf /volumes/usb/IOUSBFamily.kext /volumes/mac/System/Library/Extensions cp -rf /volumes/usb/IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext /volumes/mac/System/Library/Extensions /volumes/usb/pfix and then choose mac partion to start pemission fix download pfix from here http://osx86.sojugarden.com/files/pfix3.1.tar.bz2 please be concert to mac word mean what it is partion of mac write name of your partion and usb is the name of usb device write name of device hope this helpfull" The first step says to input a "mount" command. I popped in my install disk and opened terminal. When I try that mount command, I get "permission denied". So I'm unable to proceed with the file replacement. My main volume is called "OSX SL". I didn't have a USB drive available, so I added the files to the root of my phone and put it in "Mass Storage" mode. It shows up in OS X as "NO NAME". I'm not sure if either of those titles is going to be an issue with trying to replace the new files with the old ones. I was thinking about creating a DVD and burning the files to the DVD. I haven't seen that method mentioned, so I'm not sure if it will work. I still can't test anything until I get passed the "mount" command. Any ideas about what might be going on? dothacker
did you use sudo? Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/236999-help-with-1065-update/#findComment-1582307 Share on other sites
Jbbrack03
Yeah, I did try the sudo command in front of the mount command and it said that it was an invalid command. So I went ahead and I wiped my hard drive because I needed the USB and PS2 to work. So I reinstalled a fresh copy of iatkos S3 V2 so I'm back to OS X 10.6.3 with just basic stuff installed. What would be the safest way to update to 10.6.5 without losing my USB support? I realize that there might not be a way to install without having the USB kext files get replaced. Is there a better way to prepare to replace the USB kexts? Here is the hardware that I am running: Mobo: Intel D945GTP Chipset: i945p/PL/G/GZ CPU: Intel Pentium D 3.0 GHZ Graphics: Nvidia 8800 GT 1024 MB DDR3 Network: Intel Pro/100 VE Network Right now I've got everything working great. I do not have chameleon installed yet. What would be the safest way to do the update based on what I'm using? Jbbrack03
First if you had a backup you would not have to reinstall when something goes wrong. Got a spare partition or drive?Best way to update for you IMO would be download the update from the Apple site- copy the USB kexts from S/L/E to desktop-install update, DON"T restart-replace USB kextts to S/LE-restart with -f Thank you for the instructions. So if I install the update from a file on my desktop, I won't have to reboot to actually install it? That would be great. I will try this method tomorrow (it's a work computer). I just downloaded carbon copy cloaner and I will make a backup before I try this again. I really do appreciate the input! dothacker
Install chameleon RC5 619 go to /System/Library/Extensions and copy the IOUSBFamily.kext and IOUSBMassStorage.kext to desktop download the combo update from the apple website (not from apple software update). install 10.6.5 update, but DO NOT restart when it ask you to. using kext helper, re-install the IOUSBFamily.kext and IOUSBMassStorage.kext back (the one from your desktop). Repair permission using Disk Utility. Restart. EDIT Since you said everything was fine except USB, I assume you use a vanilla kernel? USB problem happened to me too even though i was using quoopo 10.3.0 Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/236999-help-with-1065-update/#findComment-1582395 Share on other sites
flakmonkey
Same thing happened to me with the SnowLeo distro, I just rebooted from the install DVD and reinstalled iousbfamily.kext (everything else left unchecked) and USB was back straight away. Incidentally a lot of genuine Macs have been known to lose USB devices after upgrading to 10.6.5; go figure. I've now got everything running by following your instructions. I didn't have any other issues (sound, network, video all work). I really appreciate the guide! BTW, I am running quoopo 10.3.0 as well. Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/236999-help-with-1065-update/#findComment-1582876 Share on other sites
