Hey everyone. I'm new to the OSx/86 world and just tried my first install...but I'm stuck at the reboot. Here is what I have and what I got.

P4 2.4GHz SSE2

GA-8IHXP motherboard

512K RDRAM

ATI 9800PRO AGP

SOundblaster Audigy

onboard LAN

the Mobo supports RAID (Promise ATA) but I'm not using it

80GB boot drive

DVD burner NEC

I tried to follow the docs as best I could, but I'm doing a solo install, no other OS. with the HOTiSO 10.4.6 disk.

I used Knoppix to partition the drive as "af" and installed normal. The install went fine all the way to the reboot. Then I took out the OSx disk and let the HD do it's job. At that point I get an error that reads:

searching for Boot record from SCSI...

Well I don't have a SCSI device and I'm not sure why it's looking there.

I tried copying over the mach_kernel from the disk and that went well but I get the same error. I'm not sure what I did wrong, but I would really appreciate some help.

thanks

sorry I didn't include that.

Yes, I chose the customize option and the took off most of the print drivers and took out all of the language stuff.

I selected the SSE2 patch for Intel as i'm running a Pentium 2.4Ghz that has SSE2. I don't think it has SSE3 it's old.

The thing that's odd is that the kernel doesn't seem to be booting. If this were linux I'd say the boot loader was set wrong, but I'm not sure how OSX boots.

thanks

In the initial install I used Knoppix to partition the drive only to the "af" type. I didn't put a Filesystem on it, so there was no data on the drive.

I have since restarted from the boot disk and I'm not Upgrading...I guess...I've selected the 10.4.6 upgrade patch...to see that would help...but again, I think the issue is related to the boot loader. It seems to be trying to boot from a SCSI device like a /dev/sda instead of /dev/hda...that's my guess at least. I'm not sure how the boot loader works in OSX or BSD, so i'm just guessing here. The upgrade should be done in a few minutes, then I'll test again.

I'm starting to think that the HOTiSO install insn't that great. I'll see about getting another...but they are hard to find as everyone knows.

I have since restarted...

When you first boot the install DVD, do you go to Disk Utility in the Utilities menu and format (erase) the partition to HFS+?

Yep...when I installed the OS first time, when I get to the first welcom screen, I chose the "Apple MacOS X" volume, which at the time had no label. I gave it a label and hit the erase. It completed and showed only 2 volumes, "Apple MacOS X" and "OS 10 Bootable CD". I chose the Apple Journaled format for the volume.

Since then, as I noted, I updated and added one additional package, the 10.4.5 update package. I left it for a while and when I came back it looked to be booted into the Main OS. I passed the Network setup and all, and I could see my drive. So at that point I had an administrator configured and a user. I then rebooted and got the same boot error. I put the DVD back in and I'm booting from it again to see if I can figure something out. But I'm hopeful that this is a simple mistake, since I was able to get into the OS and it seems to be working.

Bootloader is the suspect. Is there a way to force it to boot from /dev/hda?

So here is some additional informatio that I just figured out.

While the installation CD is in the player it boots just fine. I go straight into the OS and everything seems to work...I haven't really tested though, but the OS is definitely up. When the Disk is out of the drive, I get the boot error.

Also, since I'm new to OSX, how do I get to the terminal window?

Even though I've never seen that kind of error, the fact that it boots with the install DVD sounds like the partition wasn't set "active".

Here is one way to do that: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=22844

In OSX, the Terminal is in the Applications/Utilities folder.

Wow!!! I knew it would something dumb like that. I booted into Knoppix and set the partition as bootable...as I should have in the beginning...and boom. Perfect! At least now it boots right. Now onto the other issues.

I'll post and research these separately but what I have left to do is...

1) get the ATI 9800Pro working right. I think I've seen something about callisto drivers...have to look into that.

2) Sound isn't working right now. I have an Audigy card and the internal device both active and neither works.

3) the mouse seems to be leaving trails on the screen...I think this is graphics related.

4) i need to tweak this for performance...it's not bad, but I could do better

5) I have to apply some of the other hacks and tweaks...

other than that, for an experiment this was a lot cleaner than my first Linux install 10 years ago... :)

Regarding your graphics card, here is what you need to dig up:

If you have an AGP Card you will need the AGPGart patch as well as the Koverg and Callisto patches.

Here's a break down of the patches:

Callisto - Custom Refresh Rate & Resolution

Koverg - Enable QE/CI

AGPGart - Required for AGP Cards

I'm reasonably sure there is no solution for the Audigy card.
