Stuck in X86PC mode

Well, the title of this topic is pretty self-explanatory. No matter what I do, my laptop always boots as if I had specified "platform=X86PC" during boot. I've added "platform=ACPI" into the com.apple.boot.plist file, I've specified it during boot itself, but nothing. I still can't shut down without manually powering down the PC, and OS X still does not acknowledge that I have a battery. Comments/suggestions?

It would help if you give a little more info : type of laptop, what install did you use and what patches. You may need a BIOS update.

i'm running a Toshiba L15-S104 notebook PC with a Celeron M 350 processor running at 1.3 Ghz. 512 megs of RAM, combo CD-R/DVD drive, basics. It's dualbooting with Win XP Home. I installed via a kinda unorthodox method that I can't find in here right now... but it involves installing Darwin to the partition, installing deadmoo's image in vmware, and then copying the virtual disk's image to the physical disk through Disk Utilities. Everything else seems to be working for now. My processor is SSE2, so I installed Maxxus's 0.5c patch.

 

EDIT: I'd also like to point out that it may or may not be really stuck in x86 mode... it just acts like it is: no advanced power options whatsoever, unable to shut down properly, and no battery options.
