Urgent: No sound on Dell E1405

I installed a clean install of 10.4.6... updated to 10.4.7 and haven't had sound for either versions. It seems it's a an established problem (see wiki).

 

Can anyone provide any suggestions on how to fix this issue? Pleaaaaaase!! I'm desperate. I need to send this computer to my sister ASAP since her apartment got robbed, so the earlier the better.
