jgoss Posted October 4, 2010 Share Posted October 4, 2010 looking forward to creating my first hackintosh, I seem to have some unsupported (as of yet), or rather, undocumented hardware. I'll post that soon and we'll see if we can get OSX/SL up and running soon. Here's my recently purchased equipment, I'm planning a dual boot of OSX and Win7. I'll be using my system mainly for graphic design, and some rendering in AfterEffects. Can't wait to feel the power difference between my desktop and my macbook pro. If I can get it stable, I'd like to attempt some mellow OCing, probably no more than 3.3 or 3.4ghz. jgoss Posted October 4, 2010 Author Share Posted October 4, 2010 well, first attempt was a complete and utter failure. No boot, no post, nothing. My belief is that my power supply just isn't providing enough juice for this power hungry CPU/cooler. (520 watts). Just purchased a new 1000watt unit, that has the 8pin 12v connector that this CPU needs. Rosewill BRONZE series RBR1000-M 1000W Continuous@40°C, 80Plus Bronze Certified,Modular Cable Design,Active PFC"Compatible ... also realized that this new MOBO doesn't have any IDE support, so my old DVD drive needs to be replaced with a newer SATA model. well, here's to hoping that this time around it'll work. thexperiment Posted October 13, 2010 Share Posted October 13, 2010 The power supply might not be the problem. Did you make all the power connections to the motherboard 24pin & 4/8pin (not sure what that board has.) Did you mount the cpu and cooler correctly? Try with one stick of ram in different slots to troubleshoot. Also make sure nothing is shorting the motherboard. Do any lights or fans come on? It could be DOA motherboard, ram, or cpu (but its probably not.) SnoopKatt Posted October 23, 2010 Share Posted October 23, 2010 Actually, your setup shouldn't need more than a 600-700W PSU, even after overclocking. Your problem could be connections, but the first thing to check is where you put the RAM. X58 boards are extremely picky about where you put the RAM, and they won't start unless you put them in the exact slots they want you to put them. This gave me a headache the first time I ever built an X58 PC, as many boards give no indication of that being a problem. It could definitely be a DOA PSU, but 700W should be plenty of juice. Your system would be better off with a good 700W PSU like a Corsair/Silverstone/etc. rather than a Rosewill 1000W. X58A-UD3R is a very similar board, as rebelraze stated. Doing what people did for the UD3R for your board may work.
