ichjetzthier
Hi! I am having some little trouble with my hackintosh. Its meant to act like a server: just stand in the corner, having lots of harddisks in it and run like a charm. But it does not... ;-) It was my first hackintosh, so it is not so very surprising that its not perfect. To optimize it, I would like to install sl server and setup everything from zero. Are there any differences between a server installation and a normal one? Do I have to take other drivers or bootloaders or whatever? Excuse my crappy english, german teachers are loosy... ;-P Thanks! Gen0
There isnt any differences that require different kexts, as osx Server in built on top on OSX to an extent. Think of it as OSX with added frameworks and management tools. That said for me it was a pain to install and prone to doing things that standard OSX doesn't do. For example, the first time I installed it, I got to the welcome to your computer dialogue and no countries displayed. After rebooting the countries worked but it failed at the end of the startup and went back to the original screen... without the countries again! It did this for me 4 or 5 times--restarted at the very end of "setting up". Never got past it--any pointers? All I really want is ical server. Is is possible to rip it with pacifist and simply install it on top of regular OS X? OP--I had to hunt down a distro release--vanilla never showed me any countries. Also, your serial won't work if it doesn't like (or recognize) your Ethernet device. ichjetzthier
I found this one: http://osx86.co/f19/how-to-update-existing...x-server-t1228/ Seems to work, just install the server-application on top of your existing OSX. pootul
I ran into the same problem, and just figured out the solution. Most people here won't be able to help you because they're in the U.S. and they'll never run into the same problem. I live in the U.S. but use a British keyboard, so I had the same issue. What's happening is that on first boot, Snow Leopard Server is presenting the unrecognized keyboard dialog, and then bringing up the configuration dialog before you can identify the keyboard. The keyboard dialog blocks the functionality of the config dialog, and the config dialog blocks the display of the keyboard dialog. What you need to do is unplug your keyboard during boot when the charcoal grey apple is display, just after the spinner dialog appears. Once Snow Leopard Server comes up and shows you the list of countries, plug the keyboard back in, and you'll be good to go. ichjetzthier
Hey guys... does not work... :-( I tried it with a tutorial working for normal SL. It uses myhack, which seems to break the installation files of SL Server. Is there any other way to install it with not too much pain? I am using a P5Q and tried this tutorial. Thanks a lot! Wayang-NT
there's no big differences to install these operating systems…do as you do to install Snow Leopard, but there's another parts to succesfuly install this beautiful server … - Snow Leopard Server will search the NIC while in the installation process…you must use the out of the box NIC (the NIC where Snow Leopard Server recognize it during installation progress) - and of course the Serial Number …. you can use the same kext(s) beetween Snow Leopard and Server … Snow Leopard Server retail installed on the machine in my sig ...Yes, it's 10.6.5 now . sorry for my english .... I'm a bit confused about how to get things to work... ;-) NIC means Network Interface Card ,,, that's your Ethernet Card .... use Chameleon to boot the machine .... if you use the 'on the fly' installation methode, you can get the MBR ...if you use the normal installation (boot from the installer disc) you can only use the GUID partition .... I've installed it from the Snow Leopard (on the fly methode) to get MBR mode ..... *there's easy as Snow Leopard installation ..... no pain in my machine Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/233239-differences-between-sl-install-and-sl-server-install/#findComment-1559710 Share on other sites

You mention the NIC problem. Can you use the setup bypass method to handle the NIC problem? (That is, touch /var/db/.AppleSetupDone then get the NIC working, and then do the setup?) I'm asking because I bypassed setup, but I can't get my ethernet card recognized, so I'm wondering if that's a problem and I need an OOB ethernet card...
