Snow Leopard on Dell Optiplex

hi all.

First, I did know absolutely nothing about Macs : I'm a Linux user.

I must buy a new computer and I like the MacBook pro design.

But the price is high and I'd like to be sure I will like it before buying one ...

So I have a dell Optiplex 745 and tried to install iAtkos v2 on it.

My first question is about MacOS Version.

I downloaded "iATKOS S3 Snow Leopard 10.6.3 Intel Installation DVD", but after installation, uname -a returns :

Darwin kernel version 10.3.0.

Is it really Snow Leopard 10.6.3 ?

My second question is about network :

I saw that the integrated ethernet nic doesn't work so I bought a D-Link DGE-528T that should be compatible. But I tried many drivers (for example, RealtekR1000_release.pkg or RTGMac_v2.0.0) but no networks.

But I wonder if the problem is that the driver doesn't work or if there is something else.

When I look in System Profiler, at PCI cards I can see that

"No PCI Card seems to be installed on this computer" (translation from the french version of the message, sorry ...).

So could it be possible that it is the PCI poblem and that what ever card I use, it will not work ?

I installed pci utils and with lspci, I can see the card, but not with System profiler ...

Except the network, everything is ok.

I think I have no sound but it is not an issue for me for now.

So if anybody can help, thanks in advance ...

Mike

Apple Menu (top left) About This Mac ... will tell you

Make sure the PCI ports are turned on in bios and turn on serial port & LPT port (seems for some reason PCI ports won't work with them off.

For the driver try this search http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&...q=&gs_rfai=

Try this kext in Extra/Extensions AppleAzaliaAudio.kext.zip

So if anybody can help, thanks in advance ...

Hope this helps

Yes, it networks finally works.

I asked myself : "how would I do if I was under Linux".

The answer was : first, try to load the module.

I digged and found command "kextload".

So I tried

kextload /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext

and popup "A new network interface was found" appear !

So now, do you know how I can make it load automatically a startup ?

Or is there any cache somewhere I must rebuild ?

Thanks anyway for your help :D

Not sure what you mean by "So now, do you know how I can make it load automatically a startup ?"

Do you mean the network interface disappears between restarts?

Anyway run this, it will rebuild caches etc Kext_Utility.zip

And I tried your driver for soundcard : it works too ...

Thanks again.

I'm now able to "try before buy" macosx ...

Glad the audio works :)
