If your mac has any USB peripherals, unplug them and try again. if it boots without having to reset the pram, open Console (Applications>Utilities>Console) and plug in your USB devices one at a time, paying close attention to Console for at least a minute in between devices. The offending device may need a new updated driver, or possibly has two or more drivers conflicting. I had a similar problem with a pesky scanner.
