SNeitzel
I just got a new Thinkpad W510. It's been a while since I've tried to install OSX on "unsupported" hardware. I have an old copy of iDeneb 1.5 It will boot the machine but not much else. Just wondering if there is anything new? Anyone have any suggestions on where to start with this machine? chopperp1
Nobody? I got 10.6.4 running on w510. I had to patch bios in order to replace wifi with atheros chipset. First i've installed osx by using latest TonyMac ##### + ##### combo (follow directions on his blog). If you have problems with booting after install (get stuck on apple logo, but hd continuously reading) then boot to a single user mode, and finish install as suggested by tonymac. My video, and audio wasn't properly working, so I grabbed kext package posted on osx86 site for 10.6.3. After reboot all (almost) came alive. I'm still working on SD reader, which I'm about to test with found kext, and still looking for solution for proper sleep/shutdown operation. It seems after sleep it doesn't wake up, and shutdown doesn't turn off the motherboard. Just issue reboot command, and turn it of manually... Good luck Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/231666-install-on-thinkpad-w510/#findComment-1552388 Share on other sites
SNeitzel
Thanks chopperp1. I will check that out. Curious about what all is involved in patching BIOS. I have never ventured there.... Have you tried to dual boot into Win 7 as well? chopperp1
Thanks chopperp1. I will check that out. Curious about what all is involved in patching BIOS. I have never ventured there.... Have you tried to dual boot into Win 7 as well? I'm not interested in dual boot. I keep my Windows virtualised... BIOS patching means flashing bios chip with modified bios file that disables checking for authorised hardware components. It is risky operation because it may brick your laptop, and you may have to send it to ibm for repairs. I was not able to find any recovery procedure on the net, so that was a gamble... SNeitzel
I figured as much. This is a work PC so I think I can live with a USB wireless dongle. I am interested in dual boot for that same reason. May even play with OSX on a USB leaving the HD untouched. I may pick your brain more when I actually get a chance to try this. Thanks again for the help. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/231666-install-on-thinkpad-w510/#findComment-1553181 Share on other sites
danbuffalo
Hey guys, I'm thinking to hook up the w510 with osx too. So I know the video card is going to work, according to the wiki, and audio too. But what about mic and webcam? Anyone tested it yet? I just made the wrong decision on buying xps 16 thinking that i can hook up a good hackintosh laptop (gonna return it soon). By the way, I just did some research here at this site http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=87175 they said Mic will work with VoodooHDA, webcam is 50/50. Can anyone confirm this? I just want to do more research before I did another stupid mistake again.
